Always strike first the fundamental tone of a chord, as the lowest E in Em. You can strum downward and upward simultaneously by using several fingers. You might consider alternating from O22OOO to O55453 and then to 779987 for different flavoring.

The same way you would strum any other cord, it depends on what your playing, you do mean the Em cord holding the B on the fifth string, the E note on the fourth, in the first position? There are so many ways to strum a cord, but like I said it depends on what you're playing. It could be an up and down motion, or in an arpeggio style, this is where the strings are played one at a time in sequence, sometimes called a rolled cord. Try finding a book on cords and how they are played, try and find one with a Cd in the back of it so that you can hear examples of how this sounds.
