In Roman Catholicism, as you probably know, we confess privately to God through a priest who administers the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
There are no "group confessions" in Catholicism. There are occasions where a priest or bishop will give a "group absolution" with the people each calling to mind their sins in silence.
This is only done in certain circumstances, though -- when there's a lack of priests, for soldiers going into battle, and so on.
This is only valid in certain cases, though, and it's understood that the people who receive such absolution are to go to a priest privately, when/if they get a chance, and confess "the normal way."

There are 2 kinds of confession. 1 is to confess that Jesus is Lord. This is an act of obedience that leads, in part, to salvation. Jesus said if we don't confess Him before men, He will not confess us before His Father. The other is to confess sin. Confess your sin one to another is the way the Bible puts it. And, of course, we must confess (and repent of) our sin to God. This is one required act of obedience to obtain forgiveness. Confessing sin to other fellow Christians is necessary to help you keep from repeating that sin. A public confession is not necessary, as far as I've read in the Bible, but if your sin is public, a public confession brings encouragement to the entire congregation.

I confess my sins to God, not a priest. if I sin against the church or there's something they should know, then I say it.
we're supposed to be a family. a family is open and encourages one another. especially to do what's right. like if a church member out of rage, God forbid, beat another member, or anyone really, they should not only apologize to the victim and their family, but the Family. they've not only sinned against one person, not just one family, and not just God. when one part of the body hurts, we all hurt.
anything CAN be confessed. but generally, only "big" things are confessed, or so I've seen. big things like "I outright sinned when it came to lust, help me" or "I acted out in anger, and I'm sorry".
