well oil has certainly helped. But believe it or not.. The middle east has been a part of history prior to oil.. Just that the western world wasnt much interested.. The china trade routes cross right across the arabian peninsula.. Mecca was a stopping point for many pilgrams in the past moving from the east westward over to africa... major major important spot on trade routes.. The arabs were rich in things like that.. pearls, arabian horses, dates.etc..
