I have read several articles about how good fish oil is good for cats and the health of their coats.
Before I try fad supplements, I like hearing from others the benefits and drawbacks from using the product.
So, has any one else tried fish oil for their cat? What happened? Good? Bad? Anything?

Fish oil is FANTASTIC for cats, and it does more than make their coat beautiful, it heals them and increases immune system. However, you don't want to give too much or the wrong kind. I give antibiotic-free (make sure it says that) Salmon capsules. Cod liver oil is more dangerous and also has too much vitamin A. And any of the vegetarian oils will do nothing for your cat. My cat's itchy skin and flakiness cleared up, and it also made stronger a kitty who was sick:) Just give one capsule a day or they will start to smell like fish oil and get oily.

PS, never just obey blindly what a vet orders you to do, as suggested above. Just like human docs, they wait for emergencies to occur rather than prevent them. I doubt they would care about the salmon oil, but just look at the healthy cat foods that are homemade or like wellness, they come with healthy items that aren't see in the chemically enhanced foods like science diet :P

When I make up my cats raw meat with the supplement powder I mix in I also add two salmon oil capsules per two lbs. of meat.

Of course my cats have wonderfully soft coats. Last Saturday I was at a cat sanctuary (45 aged cats now). They have a raw meat diet and all their coats were especially soft too.

If you are going to add any such supplement to your cats' diet you should use human grade oil from a health foods store. Olive oil is OK and the oil from animals is better. Never cod liver oil though.

I think you should consult a vet, don't give any supplements without a vets approval. What is good for one cat, could be bad for another, I don't know why a cat would need fish oil unless a vet says so.

I would ask my vet before trying any kind of supplement on my cat.
