Bloodline, family relationship! I, myself, have never hired a babysitter for my two kids (11 & 3). I WAS a teenage babysitter..and therefore would never hire one. I only have ever left my children with family..luckily I have that option. Maybe it's wrong..and maybe my opinions are tainted...but I just don't really trust other people with my kids..close friends and family are it.

friendly, always smiling, polite, well dressed, clean appearance
dont ask about the pay
i took a babysitting course at our local hospital...and now im a certified babysitter...so i think parents feel less worried about that
go out of your way to do more for the kids...bring him stuff to do from home or look up online crafts...when the parents see that you have went out of your way to think of the kid, they will like that
for your first day, come 15 minutes earlier, and on any normal day, come about 5 minutes early
always ask the parents questions if your not sure about something, or sometimes parents wont always tell you (or at least the parents i babysit for) where things are like the fire hydrant is or if your allowed to answer the phone...that will show that you are making a good effort to do good
when the parents get home, be sure to tell them about your day even when they dont ask...like he got all of his chores done, we played hide and go seek, he had a sandwhich for lunch...things like that

thats all i can think of...hope that helps! :)

Experience, experience experience.

plus good references... even for a teenage. I usually ask around... and most parents will be more than happy to share info with you about who they trust and who may be still wet behind the ears. And as a mother you have your usually set of maternal instincts and if something doesn't feel right it usually isn't. Remember these lil ones are your most precious assets so just don't just trust them to anyone!

Clean, nice, knows how to do cpr, NO SMOKING, I also looked for someone who kind-of looked like me. (I thought that, that might help my son out with the separation. And it did!!)
