My friend and I are debating about which is safer. If a plane crashes into an extreamly tall building, is it better to be on the top or bottom floor? I think top because then you can get out faster. She thinks top because then you would fall on stuff and stuff wouldnt fall on you. Which one is safer?

And the plane would hit the middle.

I would say the bottom. . . the VERY bottom. If the plane hits the top, there you go. If the plane hits the middle, there you go. Being up on top cuts off your escape route depending on where the plane hits. God forbid that should happen to anyone!

This isn't an environmental question.

Generally the bottom would be safer, although it will depend in each scenario on where the plane hits in the building and how big and structurally sound the building is, plus how forceful the impact of the plane is, which depends on its size and speed. So it will vary.

You don't say in your scenario where the plane crashes. If you are on the bottom floor and the plane crashes into the bottom floor, you're probably better off on top, assuming that the plane takes out most or all of the bottom. Same goes if you are on the top and the plane hits the top. But generally the bottom is better to be in because you can get out faster. If the plane severs elevator cables or destroys stairwells, it would be hard to get out if you were above it, especially if the buidling falls over or caves in.

A building falling over or falling in will not be a safe landing for people who are above the break point, so being above it is not good. It's true that the buidling, especially if it falls in, could crush those on the bottom floors, which would obviously be bad if you are on the bottom. But that doesn't mean life will be any better for those who are higher up and fall downward.

One good place to look would be to examine the Trade Center strikes and see if more people made it out from the bottom than the top. Seeing the horrible images of people jumping out of the top floors I'm inclined to think the bottom was a little better, but I'm not sure.

Just look at the World Triad bld. there were many more that survive on the lower floors.

I think the bottom. People lose access to elevators, stairways and ways to leave if they are up top. And- it's harder for people to get to you if you are up top.
