peanut butter will dissolve it.
no, really, it does work. it will take some time to work, but it will save you from having to cut your hair.
EDIT: i can't believe so many people know about peanut butter???
FUNNY STORY,
my oldest daughter had gum in her hair many years ago, i told her how to use the peanut butter on it. after about five minutes she tells me it is not working and what else might she try. my younger daughter (about 5 yrs old then) pops up and say's "try strawberry jelly, that's really good."

You could cut it out but if you don't want to go that extreme just use cooking oil to get it out. Rub the oil onto the piece of hair where the gum is, comb through it until all the gum is gone, and then wash your hair to get all of the oil out. This works, trust me I've done it before. Hope this helps!

A simple, safe and easy way to remove gum from hair is with peanut butter and dish soap. First, cover the gum COMPLETELY with peanut butter and, using your fingers, work it thoroughly into the hair. The oil in the peanut butter will break up the gum. This might take a few minutes, depending on how much gum there is. You'll be able to remove pieces of the gum as the peanut butter is incorporated into it. After blending peanut butter into the hair for several minutes, squeeze a generous portion of dish soap onto the peanut butter and massage into the hair. Rinse area and repeat several more times until all of the gum is removed. As a child care provider, I find this a no-fail solution and is safer than WD-40!!
Step One
apply generous amount of peanut butter to gum and rub with fingers for several minutes. Remove gum as it breaks up
Step Two
Add generous amount of dish soap to gum/peanut butter and massage with fingers for several seconds. Rinse and repeat until all gum has been removed from hair

Freeze the gum with an ice cube and then comb it out. You will lose some hair but it is better than cutting it all off.

put a peice of ice on it and it will harden the gum and then start pulling your hair strands out of the gum, very gentle and delicately... It should do the trick! Good luck.

My daughter used to get gum in her hair when she was little. I would rub peanut butter into it and the gum would start to break down. Wash and repeat with the peanut butter. ( and wash and repeat... ) It worked for us.
