It is becoming more difficult to come up with a fighter aircraft more capable that can still stay within the limitations of the human pilot. It is difficult to make a more capable fighter without spending a lot more for them. It is difficult to make a more capable aircraft that is still serviceable and not overly complex and is able to stand up to the rigors of battle, weather, conditions and abuse.

The scary question is "can the make a fighter more expensive than the raptor?" The answer is yes. The have built a super-expensive, high-tech air superiority fighter against a non-existent threat. Some times "better" does not mean more practical. The raptor does not effect the US military's effectiveness in Iraq or Afghanistan as neither al qaeda nor the insurgents have an air force.

Quoting Pfo..."But it is difficult to fly, there's a lot to it. A better fighter might be easier to fly, or have even better weapons onboard."

I see this over and over again...people who don't know, still try to answer a question. The Raptor is amazingly EASY and SIMPLE to fly and operate! Now to address your question:

Simply put, yes, its possible. Then you have to consider some things. As someone else pointed out, many factors are limited by the human in the cockpit. Also, the more you put in, the more it will increase in size & weight. You also have a bunch of folks running around crying the Raptor costs $200+ Million, when in fact its cost per airframe has never been over $140 Million and is currently around $132 Million. You build bigger and better + more advanced components = higher cost per airframe.

Yes.

In another 100 years, there will be an aircraft that will make the Raptor look like a World War I biplane. Someone on Yahoo Answers will ask a similar question to yours and someone will give a similar answer to mine.

For now and probably the next 20 to 30 years, the Raptor will rule the skies!

In theory, yes. The raptor is powerful, fast, and loaded with good weapons. But it is difficult to fly, there's a lot to it. A better fighter might be easier to fly, or have even better weapons onboard.

Currently, the Raptor is about the upper bound of what you'd expect in an air superiority fighter.

Certainly. If an F-22 costs 100 million and has capabilities that you'll never reasonably need but an F-16 costs 33 million and does everything you'd ever want a fighter to do, which one's better?

Same was said when they built the F-4. (was so good it didn't even need to have guns) Funny but they turned around and turned T-38s into F-5s so that we would have a fighter with a gun on board.

Of course it is.
Take an existing Raptor and put another gun on it.
I call it the Raptor 2.5

And to think, they were afraid that the monoplane wouldn't be able to replace the biplane.
