Using the word ton without context is like using the word dollar without context. You cannot know for sure if you are talking about American dollars, Canadian dollars, etc. There are several types of tons:
short ton = 2000 lb
metric ton = 1000 kg = 2204.62262 lb
1 imperial ton (also known as a long ton) = 1016.04691 kilograms = 2240 lb
If you are in the USA and someone uses the word ton they almost always mean a short ton.

Depends upon if you are talking about an imperial (used in the US) ton or a metric or "long" ton. A US or imperial ton contains 2000 pounds. A long or metric ton is 2200 pounds. The metric ton is defined as 1000 kilograms, and each kilogram is 2.2 pounds, so 1000 Kg x 2.2 = 2200 lb.
