I think it's selfish to have more than two children at the most. There are 6 billion people in the world. We're not rebuilding after the Flood. Yet, of course, it's the fundie "Christians" who crap out 20 kids each and cart them around in Hummers with Jesus fish on the back, and indoctrinate them all into ignorance and irresponsibility.

Wow. That's a tough question. I think the answer to that depends entirely on your point of view. I think if you keep having children when you can't afford them shows a lack of responsibility and a bit of selfishness. Other than that, whether or not to have children is a purely individual decision.

As far as religious beliefs, I believe children are a blessing from God and should be treated as such. That being said, there are people out there that just shouldn't be parents. God gave us brains and free will. We need to use both.

If you think about it, there is no non-selfish reason for having kids. People don't have kids because they think it would be good for society, they have kids because THEY WANT to have kids. They want to fulfill themselves by procreating. I'm ok with admitting that, I don't get why some people have a problem with it. Me and my wife are only going to have 1 child, and then I'm getting fixed. I don't see the need to have any more than that.

It's even more selfish when you can't afford them or they weren't planned. I also agree that people should have no more than 2 kids per couple, because any more than that and you are adding to the overpopulating of the planet, which is a serious problem right now. Kudos to those who don't want children.

Really, every decision in life is selfish to some degree because we do things that will benefit us in some way. People that give a lot to charity may seem unselfish and may seem to not expect to get anything in return, but they do. It makes them feel good so they are getting a benefit, even if it is only an emotional one.

Clearly having children is selfish. People, whom have unfilled needs in their lives, will fill the void with children. But that is not why most people have children. Most have children because they were filling their selfish needs for sex, without putting thought into contraceptives.

The link below explains all.

I am a Buddhist. We have absolutely no rule that we have to have children. Christianity mandates having children.

I think it is more selfish to have them because even the best of parents is not ever prepared to deal with all that comes with parenting and the child will always be affected by that to some dgree or another. It is especially selfish now to bring them into the world when there is so much uncertainty about the planet. I feel guilty about this at times. I love my daughters and wanted them, but I have lots of personal difficulties and who knows what the world will be like for them through their lives.

Planned children are personal preference. It has nothing to do with selfishness. Unplanned children are the result of stupidity, not selfishness. I'm non-religious.

I think it is selfish to have children when you cannot adequately provide for them...either emotionally, time-wise, or financially.

Many just pop out babies because it is the fad. Not giving any consideration to the quality of life that the child will be able to have. Will you be able to provide for the child, send it to college? Will you be able to have time to spend with the child, or will both parents have to work 60+ hours a week just to provide basic needs. Are you emotionally equipped to deal with the demands of a screaming child, etc...

I think it is selfish to get pregnant and abort the child. Being responsible and not getting pregnant would be the greatest start to being a good person!
Having kids that you want isn't selfish, if you take the highest responsibilty in the world and do right by the child.

I am Christian and I don't think either way is selfish. Children are a blessing to your family, they are what makes a family. But if a couple doesn't choose to have children, that's ok, too. Look at Paul. He chose not to even have a wife.

The question by itself can not be answered...for either answer may be in reference to the self.
