The idea is to fall correctly. Once you learn to fall, the getting up part is easy. For a forward roll, you land on one knee and simply get up and turn around right away. If you complete a back roll, you'll be pretty much in the same position. For an incomplete back roll, or judo-type straight fall, you can just spring right back up on your feet, because you're absorbing the shock.
But a word of warning: I wouldn't try all these falls without having a qualified instructor show you how to do them first.

In a real situation the most likely reason that you ended up on the ground is because your opponent caused you to fall. If this is the case forget about fancy moves because they will be following you to finish the job just keep focused and try and regain your feet anyway that you can or try to out grapple them if you have those skills too.

the very first poster is a very humorous guy.
cool ways to get up from falling down.
1. Stay there, drunken master styles, pretend your resting, incorporate falling down into your move.
2. when you fall down, roll into it and get back up ike nothing happened, like a real styly tough guy.
3. when you fall, stand up casuallu and take your time, dust yourself off, and assume a very cool fighting stance ala Bruce Lee, and use hand gestures to make your opponent come.
4. gymnastic skills like hand springs or handsprings without any hands.
5. fall down with style!

Try watching Jackie Chan's "Drunken Master 2" he falls down a lot in the movie and pretends he did it on purpose and strikes a pose to save face, then gets up to kick more bad guys : P

theres no useful, cool way. i find it conviniant to kik them in the stomach as they get close then quickly lift myself up when they are far enough. i suppose if your just trying to be cool you could lift your legs into the air and kind of jump onto your feet. thats just for show though. youll see it in plenty of stupid martial arts movies

Didn't Mayhem Miller try to kip up in his fight with GSP? He got kicked in the head didn't he?
Yea... you should only try it if the ref has pulled your opponent away.
