He enjoys watching people suffer. He gets off on drowning people, too.

God is omniscient almighty immense and ever mysterious.
The anthropomorphic God of the Bible was contrived by the leaders of a people who decided that God had created them in His own image. The Bible contains the annals and the laws of a people who declared that they were the favorite people of God and that God had promised them a new land towards west near the sea, a Promised Land where they could live and multiply and live a better life. There have been conflicts in that land ever since.
The problems of Job are the problems of every man, of every human being, in this World of limited consciousness and of precarious life and of many conflicts and disasters.
There is a sort of transcendental meaning behind all this that is not up to us to grasp. Not yet. Maybe never in our present level of development.

Apparently God wanted to show the Devil how much of a beating Job could take without turning against him.
Its kinda like setting up a dog fight, then petting your dog after he has won.
God also, clearly didn't care for Job's original family members, as they were all killed or struck down with disease.
Christians love to focus on Jobs sticktuitivness, but forget about his wife and kids who died terribly durning the bet.
I think the moral must be, If your father is a devout believer, you are in trouble if God and Satan start chatting.

From the Jewish POV:
Job is not to be taken literally. First off, Satan in Judaism is merely the heavenly prosecutor when you die, he has no power, is nothing but a servant of God and does EXACTLY as told.
The reality is that the book of Job is seen by many as the basis for a lot of Kaballistic and esoteric ideas- it is showing, allegorically, the travails of a pure soul, in a physical world, and the temptations on the pure soul to chase after physicallity, submit to its animal body and turn its back on holiness.

Job had some growing to do, just like everyone else. He was dedicated to God and knew God was perfect but He also had some problems with arrogance and self-importance. The trials of Job were also a good learning tool for his friends who thought they had the answers to the reason Job was being tested but were relying upon their own ideas.

Yes - God knew what would happen - however Satan did not. So to answer your question directly, the point of testing Job was to publicly display the obedience of Job.

Job was made self righteous by the book that 66 men wrote that Satan was holding in His hand. Men that go by the book that man wrote, are made self righteous by the book, not by God. God just wanted Jobs eyes to be opened, thats all. Pretty simple.

to generate a fable about where pain and suffering come from in a universe supposely operated by a benevolent god. I like one of the above answers (sansfear) inclusion of the collateral damage to Jobs family. Its actually a persistent problem with Christian beliefs... Look at Abrahams kid. He thought his dad was going to sacrifice him... Do christians actually care about what that must have been like?? Women and children are collateral damage in a christian world.

He wants you to ask this question . He foresee it way back , so way back before the foundation was formed. Got it. Now listen to the good answer above and for understanding sake read the whole bible. Or the next time you will ask why God give you toe to think and not your brain.

To prove to Satan he was wrong, yet again. That those who truly love God will not fold under pressure. And to explain something God knows the big picture but the smaller pictures are decided by us. He created us He knows our strengths and weakness all He can do is give us opportunities to make the right choices.

The creator god is omniscient but NOT GOOD. It is neutral.
The followers of the "good" god refuse to see that he is neither all seeing nor all knowing.
