Daughter (7) is constantly asking for permission for the silliest things. "Mom, can I take my socks off?" Never once in her little life has she ever been told to ask permission for this, been punished for this or even made to feel like she may have to ask permission. This morning she asks "Mom can I have strawberries after I finish my breakfast" "Yes, hun you can" 1.) I've told her numerous times that if she finishes her breakfast/lunch/dinner she is welcome to anything in the fridge. 2.) After she finishes her breakfast, she still tracks me down through the house to ask if she can have strawberries (even though I already said yes) What is it she is really looking for? Also, I find it funny that she won't ask for permission to draw on her walls or to throw her necklace beads into the fan to watch them spew throughout her room.

maybe she just wants a little attention. or maybe she is afraid of getting in trouble. She may just be testing her independence. In a few years time she won't be wanting you opinion or permission for anything.

My kids both do that. Sometimes it can be annoying, but most of the time I'm glad. When my nephews come over they never ask for permission for anything. They will get sodas without asking or go get a snack out of the pantry. They get into everything. I just try to be grateful that my kids are well behaved 90% of the time.

I guess it's a displacement activity.
To draw your attention away from her acts that she knows you disapprove of, she will put on the mask of an very obedient child who needs permission things. That's my view of it.

But why are you giving her permission to eat anything in the fridge she wants? Anything? She will become a food addict that way, if she isn't already.
Time to put on the brakes.

my 8 year old son does that too. I will have to tell him anywhere to two to four times that he can do something. It' is a little annoying. But i have hope he will grow out of it. He has his younger sister and brother doing it too. I don't think it is a attention thing either. He has my undivided attention when ever he wants it.

when I was 4 years old( I am now 23 age), I remember I asked mum permissions for everything like your daughter. mum! Can I eat it?, Can I pee?, Can I use bathroom, Can I wear this shirt? I am a dependent person now. Mum chooses my clothes until now. maybe that's her character. she's happy when she gets permission because she knows when she asks something, she knows She'll definately get permission for that. she won't ask you something that you won't give her permission to do. doesn't she ask you many question? doesn't she ask you something she already know? because I remember I did. I felt proud when I did that.

When I was little, I had a friend who did this same thing. I would guess she's looking for affirmation of some sort. Maybe she wants you to fix the strawberries for her.

Maybe she thinks if she dosen't ask for permission she can get in trouble so she dosen't want to get in trouble so she askes you if she can do these things. Or she wants more attension from you.
