The methods suggested so far all sound good, but here's one more. Make a solution of lemon juice or cut a lemon and rub it on your hands. The citric acid should take away the onion smell. You will want to wash with soap and water afterwards and don't try to eat the lemon!!

Prevention is better than cure..
Next time cut the onion under running cold water.
This time rub the juice of a fresh lemon on your hands

try lemon juice. a really fragrant hand cream after washing with a fragrant soap and rinse your mouth with mouth wash. Also be sure to wash down the space where you were preparing the onions. The smell on the surfaces can "remind" you and bring the smell to your memory. A little room sanitizer like febreeze is good too.

Lemon Juice is what old cooks used. Also the moment you
stop cutting put dish liquid directly onto the palms and rinse
with hot water. Remember the longer it stays on the harder
it is to get off, so don't wait untill you are through with prep to
remove it.

For onion and garlic odor, use a stainless steel spoon, like a soup spoon or serving spoon, rub it between your hands thoroughly as you hold them under running water. The properties of stainless steel neutralize the odors.

I agree with Lisa M. Rub your hands on stainless steel. It sounds silly, but it really does work!
