Not so sure..... after all, being a "state" is not only an economical relationship, but a common; culture, tradition, languague and uses sharing........We dont have a common background, not even in the language fields.....Can a country could really see in equal chances and oportunities, to a state that don't even understand?

Here are my two cents. Yes, definitely, no doubt about it. Puerto Rico should become a state in the American Union. To all of you that say that with statehood, culture is lost, I got this to say to you, NOT TRUE. I actually live in New Mexico and in the city that I live, 70% of the population is Hispanic, Mexican obviously. All the major things of the Mexican culture are celebrated along with American holidays and nobody feels threatened. People here speak Spanish and English and if you only speak Spanish, you can communicate with people. Thus, the culture of a place is not dictated by being a state or not, it is dictated by the people that live in the place. If the population of this city wants in the future to get rid of their roots, it is their prerogative, but I do not see it happening any time soon. Remember that this part of the country, New Mexico, Texas, Arizona came into the U.S. in the 1840's and even after all that time, there has not been a decrease in the Mexican culture in this area. So the excuse that if Puerto Rico becomes a state it will lose its culture is plain B. S.

More than 500 years of colony from Spain and the US is too much for P. R. The Statehood is only the culmination of the colony.
P. R is a nation no doubt and I'm proud of that. We are like a son maintained by the father. We can't grow because we believe that we can't live alone and the father is happy with that relation. Never less the father is the one that make the important decisions that affect your way of living. There's only one simple question to ask to ourselves: Are we Americans or are we Puerto Ricans? Neither of the 3 principal parties are willing to answer this question. In this globalized world is a tragedy that a incredible country as Puerto Rico is unable to join the community of nations.
What are we waiting for? I don't know.

ok so this is my opinion...
Yes i do believe they should become a state...
1- they are already paying sky high taxes...and still where's the money goin to...
2- the salary wages are way to low...and they don't have many unions here to help out the fellow worker..you can be working for the same company for 10yrs making the same salary....
3- try to get health coverage from this gov. is rediculous..cause the jobs aren't required to give it...and the gov. doesn't either...
This island is Puerto Rico.....but we are also Americans.....they will never take your nationality....your flag.....your language....and nothing else.....this island needs help....if it becomes independant( which will never happen) you will see alot of Puerto Ricans moving to the states...
Hey but it's my opinion....

No, Puerto Rico is a nation. Has its very own language,(spanish), latin american culture and it's own national identity.
PR is different. They need to be independent just like any other spanish speaking latin country.
