Apart from better or worse, there will be always a religion and a god supported by that religion. Because many people tend to believe in a creator and ruller. Some need to believe in fate, as they think things happens beyond their will. And some need to trust something beyond any power. And many need to be sought when they commit a crime or bad behavior.

There was always a religion and power source. There will always be. The problem is when there are extremely competitive religions and they become the ruller of nations. Then world goes into a war, always.

Worse. In times of great dispair, humans turn to a higher being. The Great Depression, World War 1, World War 2, 9/11... the United States became more religious because it gave people something to think about rather than their own misfortunes. Bad things will always happen until the end of time. Might as well believe in something to get you through it.

You pose a question that is very difficult to answer. Evidence seems to indicate that religion was used to form our 1st large civilizations & it was a good control factor for leaders of the period. Like any other discovery religion depends on those in power to make it a good thing or a bad thing.
Looking at our current situation, one would think it is time to get rid of religion as a tool of power for aspiring dictators.

We've seen the "no god, no religion" world - it was called the Soviet block, the Iron curtain. I think it is safe to say that little experiment didn't work out quite as well as hoped.

It was perhaps the bloodiest and cruellest human culture that has ever existed, bar none.

Much better. Organized religion is the source of most of the world's irrational problems.

Better because right now religion is nothing more than an excuse to be ignorant about the world and to be intolerant of other peoples beliefs and life styles.

Worse, but if we lived under two rules it would be better. First rule is " Do Unto others as you would have them do unto you". Second rules is "eye for an eye". In other words no one would do anything that might get someone else angry or do anyone harm because then they can do harm to them!
