What are your fitness goals? What kinds of exercise interests you? My advice would be to tour the gyms in your area, and get a feel for each place. Atmosphere is as important as the equipment...you're less likely to spend time there working out if you're not comfortable.

Look for a gym that provides a solid base for you to pursue your interests. For example: If you like low intensity, perhaps look for something that can offer you a pool or yoga classes; if you're interested in weight training, look for a good selection of free weights and check out the machines. Talk to the staff. How can they help you achieve your fitness goals?

Gym memberships can be an investment, both in monetary terms and time spent there. Taking a little time to see what's out there can help you get the most out of it.

I joined the gym earlier this year, and felt similarly at first. But trust me - there are all sorts of people who use gyms. It won't only be "rude boys". There'll be very toned people, overweight people, middle-aged people.... each of them doing their own thing and honestly not even watching anyone else. There's generally a kind of ettiquette in the gym whereby people don't look at other people much at all... I know when I'm on the cross-trainer, I'm struggling so hard to reach 20 minutes that I wouldn't even notice a streaker if they ran past. True! The first time you go, you might feel a bit silly, because it takes time to learn to use the machines. But everyone has to start somewhere, and people understand this. As the weeks go by, you'll feel more and more comfortable. Don't let nerves stop you! Good luck.

One that's reputable, clean and is close to home or work. It all depends on what you are looking for. Just the basics (cardio equipment and free weights/machines) or one that also offers classes such as aerobics, spinning, water aerobics, pilates, child care, pool, hot tub, personal trainers, etc. Check out several gyms. Most will let you try them out for a short period of time. Check with the Better Business Bureau about a gym's reputation. YMCA is usually pretty good and you can use your membership at other YMCA's across the country if you travel.

It all depends on what you are looking for. A gym with a daycare, a gym that is less crowded with younger people who don't respect others, or a gym that is cheap?
