I took out broadband and option 2 telephone with BT and the contract isn't up until 11/09/08, but I want to cancel now.
Can I? Is there a way around this?

Any lawyer will tell you that you can always get out of any contract. This is true here as it is elsewhere.

The lawyer will further tell you that:

1. There may be penalties for early termination and this is usually the case.
2. If there are service issues or failure to perform on the carrier's point you may be able to use this to mittigate or soften the early cancellation penalties.
3. Legal fees, if you need to hire an attorney may markedly exceed early cancellation fees.

The reason for cancellation is what comes into play here. You cannot cancel a contract without penalty just becaue you feel like it or some competitor has come in with a lower price. This is not ethical or legal.

Contracts are written to protect both sides. That is why they are set up.

If you've signed a contract to Sept 08, you'll need to pay a penalty if you want to end it early. This is usually the value of the remaining term.

However, if they have failed in any aspect of the service they're providing you can use this to get all or some of the penalty waived. But, this doesn't work if you just want to cancel because there are cheaper options elsewhere.

i had the same; broadband and option 2 telephone and wanted to cancel after a few months as too expensive but had to pay the whole amount for the rest of the contract year. so wasn't very happy.

If you just signed up to the contract recently then they might be able to do something but if it has been a long time since signing up to the contract then i dont think they can cancel it. They can cancel it but most of the time they ask you for rest of the contract's money or some other legal fees etc. Just phone them and ask and im sure they will be happy to assist you with your problem.

Dont know about the broadband but i had a contract with BT for a phone and ended it before a year had gone by, had no problems at all to be honest. Ring them up and talk to them, they're usually reasonable with stuff like that.
