sounds like either the cancer or a treatment is affecting his liver. i've never know jaundice to be a good sign - shows the person is in liver failure. liver failure isn't fatal 100% of the time. he should talk to his doctor.

what sort of cancer?

Well, jaundice by itself is not life threatening, it's just a symptom, to say whether it denotes something dangerous or not I would have to know what causes it.
But yes, cancer patients can and sometimes do develop jaundice, for many reasons. The cancer may block the bile ducts leading from the liver or metastatic tumors may infiltrate and replace enough of the liver that it is no longer able to process bilirubin. Some cancers can cause jaundice by causing hemolysis (the destruction of red blood cells).
It's not generally a good sign, but to say any more than that I would have to know what sort of cancer and why the jaundice develops.

Yes cancer patients do get jaundice (their skin and eyes turn yellow). It's not a good sign because the high bilirubin tells you that something has gone very wrong in the patient's liver.

My brother had high bilirubin and it never came down to normal. Then his skin and eyes started to turn yellow. Additional tests revealed that his liver had "shut down" and he died about 2 weeks later.

If I could give you any advice it would be to give the patient every bit of the love you can find in your being. Tell them that you love them; you'll be glad that you did later. Talk to them whether you think they can hear you or not....they do hear you. Don't ever talk about their condition or prognosis while you're in the room unless they ask. If they do, then be as honest with them as you know how to be. It may well be that they need to take care of some "unfinished" business. Offer to pray with them or have their favorite minister visit because it can be a wellspring of peace to them.

Jaundice would mean the liver was affected. And the second part of the question is simply unanswerable, nobody knows here if he or she will, or during how much time.

I got very jaundiced from the tumor blocking my bile duct. A stent solved the problem temporarily but it could return. One of the more irritating symptoms of pancreatic cancer.
