You are obviously an Australian, so let me break it down for ya. The TV companies don't want the footy games of each country to clash on telly, so time zones were created. This way, games, with lets say a 2.30 kickoff, start at different times!!! (not really but this may be easier for you to understand! Real answer, Kiwis see the sun 2hrs before you do)

This is a simple one to answer & the reason is the sun rises from the east & sets in the west so therefor as New Zealand is further to the east than we here on the east coast the sun rises 2 hours ahead of us.This is why the time difference is between the 2 countries of Australia & New Zealand. Its the same as Sydney & Perth there is a time difference between the 2 cities as for the same reason, the sun reaches Sydney before it does Perth,it is that simple-the sun is the reason why.

The eastern States of Australia use the 150°E meridian for their time zone. This makes them UTC + 10. New Zealand lies mainly between 170°E and 180° and uses the 180° meridian for the time zone. This makes them UTC + 12.

We in NZ are ahead of the Australians because we are nearer to the International date line than they are. The day starts here.
