Science, is the organized body of knowledge aquired by humans through research and observation, science give us humans a better understanding of technology, mother nature and the world around us, it’s main purpose to the individuals is to produce models of reality.
Science is an important aspect of our lives, but in the wolrd today, science faces a conflict with religion and politics which could exclude it from acheiving it’s main goal.
Ex: the stem cell research: religously it is said to be a sin to many catholics, but for scientists it is an experiment to be fully explored, but politically the U.S president being catholic himself banned any sort of research from happening.

It almost makes sense. The purpose of science is not to produce models of reality. The purpose of science is to investigate the natural world. period. end of sentence. Technology is the application of scientific principles. Science is research driven, technology is product driven.

The debate is not just religion vs. science. It's also the acceptance of ethics within the scientific community. Scientific research without regard to the ethical and social questions is not a good thing. Just because we CAN do a thing, does not necessarily mean that we SHOULD do a thing.

The abortion / stem cell debate is just such an ethical problem. Should stem cells from an aborted foetus be used to carry out research which could help many people suffering from diseases such as Parkinson's?

The ethical resolution could be:
Is abortion legal? Yes.
Will the aborted foetus be discarded if not used? Yes
Will research using these cells help alleviate suffering? Yes
Ergo. Stem cell research on this material should be allowed.

The question then would be whether abortion is ethical. In my opinion, if the abortion is elective (not done for medical reasons) then the abortion is not ethical. The reason being is that the potential for life is being denied without cause. Using stem cells from this type of procedure would not be ethical.

If the abortion is done for medical reasons: psychological as well as physiological, then the abortion is ethical. The potential for life is being denied for the well being of the woman carrying the foetus. Using stem cells from this type of procedure would be ethical.

Stem cells can also be ethically harvested from the discarded umbilical cords of infants.

I am a Christian. I think that the Bible always proves scientific fact. With that said, stem cell research is a legitimate option, in my opinion. If the scientists are correct, many diseases could be cured and/or eradicated from the world using stem cells. I don't think God has a problem with us using the knowledge that He gave us.

I'm not very well informed on the matter, but I think stem cell research is done using the cells from aborted fetuses. Since there are going to be abortions, why not make the lives of those babies count for something? No matter what anyone says, God is pro-choice. Otherwise, the fall from innocence would never had happened. Peace.

False...

1. There is NO BAN ON RESEARCH. This is a bit of fiction which those who support it for POLITICAL REASONS like and their allies in the popular media perpetuate.

2. Bush is NOT CATHOLIC.

... There ARE SEVERAL RESEARCH PROJECTS IN PROGRESS. The VAST MAJORITY of SCIENTISTS in the field DOUBT that ANY treatment can be found and do not support the research - thus they are OPPOSED to it taking available funds away from VALID RESEARCH PROJECTS.

As I recently saw it put, over 70 treatments or cures have been found USING ADULT STEM CELLS. NONE - ZERO HAVE BEEN FOUND USING EMBRYONIC STEM CELLS in MANY YEARS of research.

zenith's question below:

Will research using these cells help alleviate suffering?

... MANY SCIENTISTS AND BIO-TECH COMPANIES DON'T THINK SO. Research has been going on for YEARS with NO "cures" ever found. That is the reason MANY scientists and physicians are opposed to significant funding of EMBRYONIC stem cell research. (...It takes available funds AWAY FROM research which DOES have a significant chance of producing VIABLE RESULTS = "CURES," thus, spend research dollars with REAL costs/benefits in mind.)

This issue has been politicized to death. I know a physician who is currently serving as an elected representative. He has repeatedly been challenged for opposing GOVERNMENT SPENDING on embryonic stem cell research. The simple fact? HE AGREES WITH HIS COLLEAGUES IN SCIENCE AND MEDICINE WHO DOUBT THE CHANCES FOR "SUCCESS."

George W. Bush is not a Catholic. He's an idiot, but he's not a Catholic.
