Are land phones a thing of the past or do most people still have em?

we still use them, and i think they will be lasting for another few years at least. And businesses definitely will need land lines.
Mobile phones are still too expensive to use compared to land line and some areas dont have really good receptions.

I still have mine and will probably have it for a long time. Cell phones are a great convenience, however I personally feel landlines are more reliable.

Keep in mind if you have VOIP, the emergency 911 service will not work. With landline phones, calls, including 911, get routed directly to their intended destination. Since VOIP is internet based, it has to go through many servers first before getting to its recipient.

Add the fact that VOIP service is transportable (you live in NYC and can take your VOIP phone to Miami), 911 operators have no real way of knowing exactly where you are.

And probably the best reason against VOIP: it runs on electricity. If the power goes out, your computer will not run, thus VOIP is out. Even with a laptop, your battery's charge will only get you a couple of hours max. There goes your phone...

For now, I'm sticking to my old-skool, dinosaur phone.

As long as I have an alarm system and satellite receiver equipment that needs to be hooked up to a landline, I'll have one.

Besides, with the interest in VoIP and the lack of ubiquitous coverage for cellular telephony in rural areas, there will always be some form of landline service for quite sometime to come.

I got rid of mine. no sense in paying a landline bill just for solicitors to call me. Everyone in my family is equipped with a cell. I can reach my kids anywhere :)
