I currently use Ubuntu, which works well as long as you have 256 mb Memory.
I have also previously used Mandrake (now Mandriva), not too bad but I found it a bit sluggish.
And Puppy Linux, excellent distro, but I had some problems finding packages that would work with Puppy, that might have changed no. Puppy can run on a very small system But ChubbyPuppy which is their large distro can run with as little as 128mb Ram, and very little HD space
But you can also check out Distro Watch, they have some excellent information on different distro's.
Good luck with your Visit to the world of Linux, and Open Source software.

If you can find an old version of Red Hat (4 or lower) a 386SX, 1 meg RAM and 500Mb hard drive.... You asked for the min spec, LOL.
Nowadays... if it ran Windows, it will run Linux with a GUI.

Depends on what distribution. Theres a distro called dsl (damn small linux) that will fit on just about anything. It was designed to run off of smartmedia cards so you can boot your own OS on another computer.
The popular ones righ now are ubuntu--(designed for home use)
