Well, by protien diet do you mean Atkins? Don't do Atkins- it's a short-term solution that only accomplishes 3 things: 1.) You'll be grumpy as hell 2.) You'll gain all the fat back that you lost as soon as you start eating like a normal human again 3.) You'll be putting your health at risk.
You shouldn't need much more than 1g of protein per pound of body weight, but perhaps a little more like 0.8g per pound if you're less active.
Cardio is not THE answer- it is only part of the solution. Don't leave out weight training- it's the bulk of your fat-loss program, next to diet! Yes, weight training is the key to successful and lasting fat loss! I won't go into the whole scientific explaination here, but trust me, it works and works well!

Anyway, average HEALTHY weight loss is 1-2 pounds per week. If you're losing any more than that, you're losing it too fast and you'll be setting yourself up for rebound weight gain. (gaining back all of the original weight PLUS a few pounds!)

Lift weights 3-4 times a week, do cardio 3-5 times a week (make sure to take at least 2 days off per week), and eat a healthy diet with LOTS of vegetables, adequate protein, and a moderate amount of low-GI carbs. Better yet, have a personal trainer set up a program for you so you'll be sure to get the results you're looking for!

Well you could average it out. It depends on several factors. For instance, I went on Atkins (which amounts to the same thing), and I lost 18 pounds in two weeks. But I weighed 275, and needed to lose 80 pounds. If you only needed to lose 20 lbs, you might lose 6 to 8 pounds in two weeks. (probably about 1/2 pound per day)
