entirely dependent on your rating(if you enlist) or your Community( if you are commissioned.)

all enlisted contracts are for 8 years , although a minimum number(typically 4-6) must be on Active duty. the length is based on what field you choose and directly corresponds to the amount of training you receive.

when you say you plan on attending a 4 year college, do you mean in conjunction with ROTC, attending the Naval Academy, or just going to any school and then applying for OCS? Your time in service does not start until you are Commissioned if you go that route. the Aviation and Nuke community requires at least 8 years of commitment, which is in ADDITION to any training you receive after commissioning in the field...and expect at least 2 years of training. additionally, you will incur additional commitment if you are selcted to attend NPS or get promoted past a certain paygrade(typically once you accept O5 and up, you are obligated to serve x number of years in the paygrade before you can leave.)

You start building your GI bill benefits when you enlist (sign the contract). How much money you have to spend depends on if you complete a hitch (generally 4 years) and how much you contribute. In general, after 4 years you have a total of in the neighborhood of $25,000 in benefits for education.

You can take some courses while in the Navy that can apply to your degree. The Navy will pay outright for some, reimburse you for others. When you get out of the Navy you have a limited amount of time to apply you GI benefits to your education.

Your USN service does not start until you get on the bus for boot camp. You can take classes on your own time while in the Navy and as a full time student after you get out.

It counts the day you sign the Contract. they have a minimum of 4 years and up to Six years for Nukes. If your gonna go Navy, might as well do the whole 20.
