I agree...it USUALLY does, depending on the level of infection, the dosage given, and if you have enough of the meds.
Tooth would probably need to be removed after infection is gone or abscess will return.

A tooth abscess is one of very few dental emergencies. An antibiotic needs to be started. Cephalexin is a good choice but I would pass on the ampicillin & go with augmentin which is similar but has better coverage. The tooth needs to come out ASAP though, Dog.

You have a very very sick guinea pig here and you need to keep on feeding him as you have been. Feed him every 3 hours around the clock. What happens to guinea pigs when they get sick is their body chemistry gets off they forget how to eat, literally forget how to eat so you must feed them until they can feed their selfs again. I had one guinea pig I had to feed for 14 days before she was able to eat on her own, yes she was no more then skin and bones in the end but put her weight right back on once she started to eat. May I suggest you find a different vet, an exotic vet will know what is going on with your guinea pig and how to properly treat it. Right now you are simply treading water with it and I feel you need a better course of medical treatment with this guinea pig which yo will find with an exotic vet.

Antibiotics "might" be given prior to tooth extraction but usually the only thing to do is to extract the tooth.

I know penicillin does. I think those do too but not sure you can look it up on line or call the pharmacy and ask them if they are used to treat tooth infections.
