It sounds as if bacteria has gotten under the nail and infected it.

The only way to releave the pain is to remove the infection.
To do this you will need to see your Doctor or a foot Doctor.
They can then also treat the toenail permantly.

Once they releave the presure of the infection the pain will subside greatly.

In the mean time take your shoes and socks off and try and stay off your foot as much as you can. At night use a chair, with two legs tucked under your matress, the other two legs in your bed, to keep the covers off of your toe. As I know that when it hurts that bad that even the presure of the covers kills.

Good luck.

I have had ingrown toenails. This is where part of your toenail has grown down into the skin of your toe to the point that it has opened the skin, and bacteria has gotten in there and caused an infection. Here's what works to fix it:

Go see your doctor. He will numb your toe, then cut off the offending portion of toenail. He will probably give you antibiotics to kill the infection.

You will need to be off work for a day or so, and your toe will throb for several hours. Take whatever pain pills he tells you. Tylenol with codeine works wonders. After a few days, you will be back to your old self.

It sounds like a nail infection. While I'm sure we have no shortage of cyber badazzes and netterweb Rambos who will tell you to rip the nail out with pliers, cut it out with a pen knife, or some other insane MacGyver style medical treatment I'd say your best bet is to have a professional take care of it. Surgery is not a do it yourselfer job and that's why you got health insurance.

If you don't have health insurance get some. It may mean having to brownbag it for lunch or having ramen soup once in a while but in the end it will pay for itself.

Asd for dealing with the pain I'd say wear open toed shoes like flipflops as much as possible to ease the pressure on your toes and to soak your toe in some warm water.

Yep. Where the nail breaks into your skin on the side of yur toe.....it makes an infection and the pus is yellow and it dries but stays under he nail some. Long term, have the doc look at it, short term....pull it out of your toe enough to trim it.
