I went from being a Christian to being an atheist. I was ridiculed, asked, "Why would you want to do THAT?," and beyond all alse, considered a "bad" person, by many Christians.

However, I personally guarantee that, had I gone instead from atheism to Christianity, I would've received applause and words of encouragement from these same people.

How is this fair? I believe I deserve the same kindness shown to newly converted Christians. Shouldn't I, and anyone else, be respected for my religious beliefs?

well, they should love you and remember that God gave us all free will to choose what we do or believe. But in most cases they see it like this...you had a winning lottery ticket and you threw it away, or if a family member or close friend does something you see as unwise or potentially has no positive impact on there life you get upset because you care for them right? We are to love and respect eachother. Christains are human and are not perfect. Some "Christains" are really not perfect lol and ruin the image of Gods love. I hate to hear you left the lord. It is however your choice. God still loves you no matter what you do. May I ask why you chose the way you did? There are many "false prophets and wolves in sheeps clothing" out there that push people away from God. If this is the case with you I'm sorry. If I can help you in anyway just ask. Ask God to help and guide you.
Matthew 7 "Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.

I'll pray for you tonight. I hope all goes well for you. God bless =)

write the same question and replace the word Christian with Atheist and see what you get. from the Atheist.
if you were a Christian then you knew God and if you knew God, then how can you become an Atheist and not believe that a God exist?
and that is why you were ask how could you do this.
there are many who claim to be Christian for one reason or another, but the only way to really be a Christians, is you have to know God.
being a church goer does not make you a Christian.
teaching Sunday school does not make you a Christian,
and pastoring a Christian church does not make you a Christian.
the only way to be a Christian is to have a personal relationship with God through Jesus Christ.
however I can respect your right to believe what you do,

As a soldier we are COMMANDED ( U. S. Army ) to follow orders.A soldier will NOT RESPECT anything that goes against the mission of the military....In the same way a Christian will LOVE the non believer BUT will not respect there position because the believer is ORDERED to share Gods truth with every person

Welcome to the real world, girl.
Xians only preach love and tolerance when they're in the driver's seat or they ain't getting none.

StoryJunkie mentioned “Unconditional Love" is ONLY found in God.

Sanctimonious self-righteous gits turns my gut.
Unconditional love is found lotsa places; it doesn’t require the presence of any Invisible Sky Critters – in fact it does most well when there are no ISC about.
Mothers and children usually do it automatically and easily.
The only time you’ll get love from Theists is when you’re doing as they want but it is really CONDITIONAL love.

Back to the StoryJunkie concept of unconditional love.
The ISC will love you as long as you are his slave or b*tch; as soon as you stuff-up by doing your own freedom thing, you’re outa the nest, you’re history.

See how similar the ISC and his slaves are?
You’re better off without them.

Enter the World of Knowledge. Your brain must be starving. LOL
I’ve attached some Atheist sites. Well I tried to.

Become introduced to Robert Ingersoll – probably USA’s most famous, and definitely most erudite, atheists.
His essay about The Holy Bible is most interesting and revealing.

Should a person who denounces their US citizenship get the same respect as a person who doesn't denounce their citizenship? Our Constitution says that such a person should never be allowed to become president should they move back and change their mind in denouncing their citizenship.

What you have done is essentially shown yourself to be a traitor and a defector to Christianity. So why do you think you deserve respect? You disrespected all Christians when you decided that their faith was not good enough for you and that you are better than they.

Since a Christian would tend to believe that an athiest will burn in hell, their response probably comes from the dreaded thought that you'll be going there if you're an athiest. It's only out of concern for you because of the way they believe. You still deserve the same respect as anyone else, but respect and concern are two different things. I don't think they mean anything bad by it.

First of all- I am a Christian- not by man- but by God. Secondly, YES! You do deserve to be treated with the same respect- NOBODY IS BETTER THAN YOU.

That's probably why you decided not to be a Christian- the people around have not shown you what true God-made Christianity is- but I am here to tell you- you are welcome to chat or exchange emails with me- and I will not hate or demean you in any way- but I will not duck the truth.

Fair??
Anyone who leaves the 'duck-yard' is called a bad person.
I experienced similar when I moved abroad.
But feel happy.
They have revealed themselves - now you know that they are not Christians ( as they do not know how to love someone who is different) That their claim of Christianity is just a hoax.
Now you have learned not to fall into the 'religious trap' again.
Stay outside of all religions ( fixed belief-systems - also includes Atheism ( as they ar no better - they will also renounce you if you change your mind).
Be happy.
Your experience is not fair - to those 'Chrisitans' - to you it has been more than fair.
You have got the opportunity to learn something - they didn't.

"Fair" is a concept best left on playgrounds. If you abandon atheism then I am sure some atheist would say "Why would you want to do THAT?,"
Believe as you will not as others want you too. If you believe that there is no god then why should you care about the opinions of those who believe you are wrong? After all you believe they are wrong. Don't they have the right to believe you are?

To paraphrase Yoda
Fair leads to political correctness
Political correctness leads to hypocrisy
Hypocrisy leads to really stupid decision making.

Anybody whom go from Christian to be an atheist, never been Christian anyway. As for asking respect for this, that really show your ignorance about religions.
