Dodge Neon
Ford Focus
Chrysler Cirrus
Chevy Cavalier
Basically find a nice domestic (you'll get more car for your money) and get it checked by a mechanic BEFORE you buy it.

Honda's are good, my first car was one and never had any issues. If I were you I'd go on craigslist for your area and search between 4 and 5 grand. A lot of civics will pop up and you can search for the best deal. Lower miles are often times a better thing to look for than the model year when it comes to used cars.

I'm partial to the Mazda MX3. I had a 93 model than ran perfect. But try to thing about safety most of all. Maybe if you stress that to your parents they might chip in a little more to get you a nicer safer ride.

If you can WAIT alittle while, see if your parents will sell you THEIRS when they go to buy a new one. THAT way you'll know what you're getting, it probably will be half-way decent, AND- they'll cut you a "break" on the price- because you're a "Good Kid..." Right??? :) Good luck.

My first car was a 96 ford ranger...ran it too 200,000 miles. Paid 4500 for it. Honda's are kick *** cars. BUT....they hold their value...unless drove to the ground(lot of miles on it). If you can...haha get a 240sx...

I WOULD GO WITH A FORD FOCUS, RELIABLE WHEN DRIVEN RIGHT AND TAKEN CARE OF AS IN CHANGING OILS AND FILTERS WHEN IT NEEDS TO BE CHANGED.
