I have been saving up money to buy an HDD upgrade, but then saw an add about the gameshark 2 for the PS2. What would be the best choice to spend my money on? HDD upgrade (I don't have the slim one), the gameshark 2, or would I be better off buying some other PS2 component.

The HDD would be a waste of money since there isn't many games that utilize/support the HDD. Most game companies are now fixated on the PS 3 so any add-ons for the ps2 would be a waste of money at this point since the PS 2 development is slowly being eased out of future plans of most game companies.

There's only about 9 or 10 games that take advantage of the HDD so save your money and put it towards a PS 3.

When Sony released the slim PS 2 in 2004, it all but signaled the end of the HDD since the slim PS 2 cannot use the HDD.

You want an HDD for your PS2.

They still make those?

Unless you play Final Fantasy Online the disc drive is a total waste of money.

Yeah I have one of the HDD and i never took it out of the box. Unless you wanting to play FFXI and pay each month there is little to get into...maybe some extra maps on socom 2 and I think faster load times on some games. Hell, this makes me think I might put mine up on ebay.
