I know that this great weapon has a long, yet big history behind it, but compared to other .45's, the are REALLY expensive? Just curious.

Its the NAME. "Colt" carries huge charisma, history, and reputation that none of the other makers can match.

I was just in the local gun store looking at a $850 Colt 1911. Next to it was a Taurus 1911 for $530.

The Colt was blued with fixed sights.

The Taurus was blued with Heine sights, a rowel hammer, checkered front strap, front and rear serrations, and an adjustable trigger.

The Taurus was a better buy, but the clerk told me they sell more Colts than the Taurus.

Same with the Ruger Vaquero and the Colt Peacemaker single action revolvers. Put them on a table at a Cowboy Action shoot and the shooters will tell you how the Ruger is the stronger, better gun, but if they had the money they would buy the $1200 Colt Peacemaker before the $450 Ruger.

Now, if you really want to make enemies, go to the motorcycle site and ask why Harley Davidson bikes cost some much more then the superior Japanese bikes.

Why are Colt 1911s so much money? The name 'Colt.' Also, supply and demand; everybody wants one. I want one in .38 Super and saw one 'like new in box' for over $3,000 last week. That is about twenty-two hundred more than I care to pay.

Good luck in your quest for a reasonably priced Colt 1911.

All metal, lots of parts (2x as many as a Glock), and it's a huge market with a lot of potential for differentiation.

A GI model will run the same price (or cheaper!) than a Glock, but custom models with more features are naturally more expensive.

EDIT: I thought you meant 1911s in general. Colt just has history in the brand, like Nike or Harley. It's not actually better and according to many, worse than some of the competition, especially for the price.

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend a Kimber over a Colt.

Colt Model 1911 US Army was only made for about 13 years. About 1924 the 1911A1 came out. Any old gun will have a price tag attached.
BTW the 1991A1s are also very expensive. Collectors will pay a premium for them even though millions were made. Not just by Colt, but by Ithaca, Union Switch and Signal, Remington-Rand and Singer Sewing Machine Company.
