Thats actually pretty cheap for an almost half carat. There are four c's of diamonds. Carat Weight, Cut, Color Clarity. My sister in law's half carat princess cut ring was 3000.00. The clarity was of the utmost priority to him and he decided to get a half carat with near perfect clarity than a full carat with imperfections.
Diamond stones alone on the market are generally 1200.00 for an average stone. Then you put the setting in and other factors. I think he got a good deal if the clarity is good as well.
Have a great night :-)

I am a certified diamontologist and worked at a jewelry store for over 6 years. First let me say there are 4 C's .... not 3. They are CUT, CLARITY, COLOR, and CARAT WEIGHT. There is a big difference between tcw and carat weight of a single stone. TCW is the abbreviation for Total Carat Weight, which means all of the diamonds adding up to the .46 which is just shy of 1/2 carat worth of diamonds. You can buy something like that for anywhere between $300 - $1000. If it cost any more than that, then it had better be flawless. (which is hard to believe he got a flawless one as they are extremely rare). However, if it is .46 Solitaire (meaning one single diamond as opposed to a bunch of little ones) then the $1500 would be about right. In fact, a better quality diamond could even be more than that. I have seen them run as high as $2 - 3 thousand for a top quality 1/2 carat solitaire. So make sure you understand the difference between tcw and carat weight of a solitaire. There are many other factors also, but in general that would be a fair estimate.

The cost depends on 3 things: 1) Cut, 2) Color, and 3) Carat. Or the 3 Cs.
So if he got a diamond that looks white/ clear and doesnt look yellowish at all that is a high grade in color (good, more expensive).
Look up the 3 C's online and he needs to find out what the 3 Cs are with the diamond ring he just bought.

It depends on a lot of things. The cut, clarity, color and how many diamonds make up the TCW. A single diamond would be 500 or more depending on the store she purchased it at.

There really isn't enough information. The quality of the diamonds has a lot to do with the cost, also the material of the ring.
A 18k gold setting with about .2 carat cost $650 at bluenile.com.

A nice 0.26 carat diamond at www.bluenile.com cost $388.

So your friend may have paid too much but it is impossible to say. I am just guessing at what he may have bought.
A nice .46 carat tw ring in a 18K gold setting could be had online for $1038.

My diamond ring was $2,000 through a jeweler that was a family friend...the ring is a round brilliant cut .62 with high clarity and nearly colorless. If the .46 ct diamond is a good quality stone, $1,500 is not unreasonable...but if the stone is clearly flawed and poorly cut, I think your friend spent way too much.

well. I am not sure. I would go to websites like www.zales.com, and research it. I know mine cost about 1,800 dollars, and it was 1.5 TCW.. The solid diamonds cost more, but if the TCW adds up to .46 it could be cheaper if the diamonds are smaller, is the way they explianed it to us.

I love when people ask these questions. It totally depends on the quality of the diamond, the setting, and where they bought it. We cant estimate, sorry.

It really depends on the clarity of the diamonds and what sort of mounting they are in.
