Sure, the Prius performs just as well as any sedan. In fact, since it has 2 engines (internal combustion and electric) the Prius can be quite powerful. Climbing some mountains between the Central Valley and SoCal with 4 people inside is no problem at all. In fact, my sister-in-law usually rents a Prius when she travels from Santa Barbara to Sacramento.

Sure the Prius can get up and down mountain passes. Why wouldn't it? It's been available in the US for nearly 7 years now, so if there was an issue you'd probably have heard about it by now... Most reports are that it does better than most other cars at keeping speed, and the regenerated power/EV mode when coming back down the mountain is a hoot!

In spite of the Prius having a smaller engine, yes it does fine with hills due to having the CVT instead of a traditional transmission. You'll glide over hills and mountains as if they weren't even there because you won't feel the car downshifting.

I drove my 02 taurus up the cascades at about 60mph and a prius was right there behind me so I would say yes. Plus the prius probobly got better fuel mileage.
