RNs get paid more...Social workers have to deal with poor people all day....

RN seems to be the better option here...and i think Social Workers need a Masters Degree....

It depends on what your motivation is. Is it money? If so, becoming a social worker is the worst place for that. Plus, if you really want to get a good social work job, you need a master's degree. If it is money, then an RN would be the better path. RN's, depending on the environment, make anywhere of $35/hr and up. RN's are in quite a large demand because of the number of baby boomers aging and needing medial care. It weeds out the LPN's and keeps the more educated/specialized nurses. Being an RN, you could work in a hospital, a nursing home, an assisted living home, etc. With social work, you could work in the post-partum area speaking to new mothers. You could also work in the VA hospitals! In terms of sanity, a social worker needs to be able to handle more stress (in my opinion) and handle it well. Either way, you get attached to patients!

Although they are both helping professions they are quite different. You should talk with some social workers and RN's.
Both can be very satisfying. The are many different types of social workers and RN's. Professional social workers usually have master degrees, but not always.

There are more job opportunities and diversity for Rn's. As a nurse you can work in a variety of areas in a hospital, or a doctors office or you may work as a home health nurse or a school nurse, or at a factory or camp, you might work with a lawyer or in a court room or as a teacher, the possibilities are endless. If you don't like one area you can try another or if you get tired of your job try a new one. Also you don't have to work a typical 8 hour day 5 days a week, you can work different shifts and a variety of days. There's always overtime if you want it and jobs to be had anywhere in the country.

Social Worker

In terms of salary-- RNs make more money (not much more, but more than social workers)
Also, depends if you like health care and medicine. Nurses (RNs) work primarily with physical health and well-being (the body). But if you're more into social issues (poverty, drug use, mental health, criminal history) then social work is your path.
Either way, both careers are extremely difficult, rewarding, and so important......but also low-paying, under appreciated, exhausting, and often not receiving the respect they should be getting.

Both professions have a certain level of burn out depending on what speciality you get into. Nursing jobs are very plentiful. Not a lot of social work jobs are high paying unless you have your masters and become a licensed clinical social worker. If you work in the local government realm of social work i.e. DFACS or DSS you will absolutely have job security.

Dont be a social worker.

One of two things will happen...

Either you will be a lazy waste of space like most social workers..

OR

You will actually be a good social worker, but you will be surrounded by people who dont care, are lazy and are a waste of space. You will lose moral, as you will feel that you are the only one that gives a damn, and you will either quit or become like the rest of them.

Be an RN... much more rewarding, better pay, and in demand.

Decide which bothers you more - disgusting body fluids or totally screwed up people.

Anywhere you go you will be able to get a job as an RN. Social work is potentially harder to get into and doesn't pay as well.

I work in social work. choose nursing. you will get more respect for your profession and you will get more money. in both jobs you will help people, but as an rn you will help more people in a larger way.
