My dr just started me on zyprexa this week. I am already starting to feel the hunger pains. What can I do to avoid the weight gain I keep reading about. It has taken me 2 months to lose 9 pounds and I really don't want to gain it back plus more. I am only 5'4" and currently weigh 124. Still trying to lose at least 4 more pounds, but I don't think that's going to happen taking this drug.
Any suggestions?

the doctors i consulted regarding zyprexia all agreed that its the increase of appetite that is causing you to eat more and gain the weight .ive seen people loseall the weight gain after they got off themedicine...zyprexia in many cases causes drowsiness so not only are you eating more but you tend to sleep or have more naps...if youve maintained your weight so far perhaps take a break from the zprexia before the hunger pains get uncontrollable you can always get back on it again if your mood swings get unbearable....no harm taking a break from zyprexia...but just in case keep some valium available or anyother tranqulizer though they r not the same
they do help getting off the zprexia

I am not sure what to tell you. I was on Zyprexa for a while and ended up having ot get off of the drug because of weight gain. I think I gained like 20 pounds in 2 months. The only thing about it is, that once I stopped taking the medication, I lost all the weight. It took a while, but I did it. So it was definitely the medication.

Yep. Zyprexa makes most people hungry like your stomake is a bottmless pit. (Some people have told me they never really feel satisfied.) The water idea isn't great. You can drink too much water and mess up your electrolyte levels. (It makes you very thirsty also.) Exercise moves your setpoint so you end up having a slightly higher metabolism. Sugar-free gum can help a little.
By the way, who prescribed it? Family MDs aren't the best for this; psychiatrists are better but even they over-prescribe it. Are you psychotic? (I know they use it "off label 'for a bunch of different reasons - mood stabilization, anti-anxiety, etc.) but I'm not buying it. (Side effects pretty bad in most people)

The best thing to do is eat 6 small meals a day and it will help. If you are really hungry eat something that is healthy (a fruit or veggie). It will help with weight control. My son takes alot of medication that causes increased hunger and I do that to him and he is mantaining his weight. Anyways don't hurt to try.
