Because people will grasp at straws to try to "disprove" God. So far all science has done in my opinion is give further proof for a divine presense.
Any universe with such a potential for complete and utter chaos would have collapsed upon itself within seconds of its birth if it hadn't been for divine intervention.

The word used for day in Genesis in Hebrew is Yom. It means 24 hours. It is interesting that the 7 day week and the rainbow are mentioned in Genesis as is marriage. During the French Revolution the Spirit of Anti Christ was so active they even tried to get rid of the 7 day week and have a ten day week and introduce metric time and do away with religious marriage and introduce Republican marriage as the Soviets did in the former USSR.
Genesis teaches that man was made complete and did not evolve, and as the world was clearly crreated in six days and as human history is as you say only around 6000 years old, what is the problem?
The moral issues surrounding us are exactly the same as those described in the Bible. The argument about the age of the earth should not obscure the fact that man is lost without God and Christ. I am not a sandal wearing tree hugger I work in chemical engineering and have yet to hear a convincing argument that the world is millions of years old (it keeps changing folks) or that men's hearts don't need changing. Even if the entire world believed that the world was created in 6 days and is only 6000 years old the world would still be in need of a Saviour.
But for believers as Jesus Himself created the world, then it is important for the enemies of truth to push evolution because evolution incorporates death and decay. And if God made the worldd with death and decay then He made it worse than we would have done, and it wasn't perfect.
Yet God delared the creation good, and very good.
Believe in evolution and the entire underpinning of the Doctrine of Creation (and hence the Creator) is destroyed.
John 1
1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2The same was in the beginning with God.
3All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
4In him was life; and the life was the light of men.
5And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not
So if He made all things and these were declared good, then things were not then as they are now as they are markedly not good, they are appalling.
Without a perfect creation there can be no perfect Saviour and there is no hope. Any Christian who thinks Genesis is just a Hebrew myth and not scientifically true needs to ask where his theology follows on from this, as Christ Himself validated the first 5 books of the Bible as true.

The Bible says God made everything in a week. It says, "the evening and morning were the first day." That is not figurative. It is essentially saying, "then the earth rotated one time, and was one day" The Bible reiterates the seven literal days later in scripture as well, all throughout scripture even. The only symbolic thing you could barely squeeze out of this is that one day is equal to 1000 years. And that would mean it was created in 7000 years. There is NOOOOOO verse that says "indeterminate amount of time" that is a human making stuff up to try and compromise what the Bible says. TAKE IT OR LEAVE IT! Either it is fact or fiction. The rest of the creation account does not even fit evolutionary theory, so adding more time does not make it fit with evolution. It just makes some people feel better. Evolutionary history is the Anti-thesis to the Bible. Plain and simple. I know I didn't really answer your question(I just hate it when people try to tell me that the Bible was speaking figuratively), but there are a lot of online resources defending creation that show how it is possible for the earth to be that young. Check it out for yourself.

A long time ago Bishop Ussher came up with the date 4004 BC for creation. We're kind of stuck with that, even though I don't think many people still use his dating system.
Young-earth creationists use about 20,000 years or so if I'm not mistaken. I don't know if they have a firm date.
Carbon dating, the fossil record, and other such dating methods are built on the false timeline of evolution. An evolutionist sees an artifact in a layer that he says is a million years old and hands it to the carbon dating guy and tells him it's a million years old. The carbon dating guy looks at his machine and says, "OK so when I see that reading it means a million years."
He then hands the artifact back to the evolutionist who says, "See? The carbon date is one million years."

Real Christians understand that God, with Jesus as his creative job Foreman has been creating for millenniums, earth, planets, suns etc.!
How ever the earth as a HUMAN Habitat has been around for 6000 years. BUT there were thousands of years before humans that earth as a rock mass existed! So I re enforce the earth for millions of years, as home to humans(according to the bible) 6000 years, and I do believe that the bible has the correct idea!

Christians believe that we have had approximately 6000 years since Adam and Eve left the Garden of Eden. No one knows how long they spent in the Garden. It could have been centuries or even millennia Therefore, we do not know exactly how old the earth is. Only God does. Who cares any way?

Let us first beware that the early humans lived long periods of time... hundreds of years, thus many many children. We must also remember that God can do something in a brief amount of time. It does not take God 6.4 billion years to make Earth, but He could chose to do it that long. However, we see in the genealogy of the book of John and the book of Genesis to calculate that humanity was brought on the scene at roughly 4004 B.C. Thus, the age of humanity is about 4004 B.C. The age of earth is never given in the Bible, and we can see that in order for time to exist, we must see the sun and moon and know what time of year it is. Look in Genesis 1. Notice the earth is made first, followed by the sun. If the sun is not present, whose to say its night or day--or spring or autumn. It is not important to debate the age of Earth--its gonna pass away anyway--2 Peter 3:9; Revelation 21:1. go to www.icr.org and www.gotquestions.org

We have recorded ancient earth history starting humans around half a million years ago. I vaguely remember reading about man existing before then. Ancient texts are ancient history and tell the true story of man. The earth has been here millions of years. If the earth was only 6000 years old it would be uninhabitable. Faith does not denote common sense. Peace and love<

The Bible tells us that the earth was created on Day one.
Man was created on day six.
Using the genealogies in the Book of Genesis, from Adam(first man) to Abraham is about 2000 years.
Abraham lived around 2000 B.C. (most scholars---Biblical and secular agree to that) That was about 4000 years ago.
So with that info alone, 2000+4000 years=6000 years.
(See works by Dr. Floyd Jones and Archbishop James Ussher.)

Jehovah´s witnesses believe that in 1975 was the 6000 birthday of creation it was calculated using the bible but the bible didn´t said that the period of creation of six days are days of 24 hours the bible use the term "day" with different lenght of time could be million of years.
Genesis is a resume of the creation didn´t give all the details but the more important factors.
