I have lost someone speacial to lung cancer. Also heard of a few more people dying of the same thing. When will man ever learn?

They always say that it wont kill them, or they can get hit by a bus tomorrow.

I don't understand it either. The evidence of its health dangers are so clear and true. It's just a habit like anything else (marijuana, cocaine, alcohol). People are always aware of the dangers, but some say it helps them deal with stress. To me that's an excuse; there are so many healthy ways to deal with stress and life problems.

That is a very solid question. As a smoker, I don't really think about it. I can tell you it's a very complex mix of physical addiction, emotional attachment, and nervous habit. The whole smoking thing morphs as it ages until what started as curiosity or a way to feel like one of the group becomes part of the very fiber of our being. You'll find that, as you age, it becomes harder and harder to let go of emotional attachments...even bad ones. And, yes, some of it, for me, is a "choose your poison" attitude. I mean, who wants to live forever anyway? At 50 years old, I'm more interested in a pleasant journey and the way this world is, life's little pleasures are getting harder and harder to come by.

I'm an absolute fanatic, however, about not forcing that nasty stuff on others and, for crying out loud, don't drop your butts on the ground! :::composure check::: Sorry... =c)

Most people start smoking as teenagers, when they think they are "invincible." By the time they do decide to quit, they are extremely addicted, and cannot stop. If a smoker wants to quit, they have to have extreme willpower to do so. And it takes a lot of time, patience, and withdrawal for a smoker to quit. Most people don't want to deal with this. They figure, "Hey, I'm going to die anyway," and just keep smoking. Even though most smokers know and understand the risks associated with their habit.

it's addictive, nicotine isn't that bad for you, it's the combustion of the tobacco that is. If the gov't or cigarette industry really wanted to save lives they would come up with a synthetically produced nicotine and that would eliminate 95% of the health risks. That's why smokeless tobacco isn't nearly as bad for you, you're not burning it. Granted it's not an attractive habit, it won't kill you like cigarettes will. My grandfather has chewed since he was in his 20's and he's fine.

Tobacco is a legal product. Cigarettes are sold, advertised, and marketed legally.

Just because people who use them legally might have health problems is no reason to stop using them.

People who drive cars might be killed because of them. Children who play with toys might be killed by them. People who sit on their couch eating Twinkies might die because of them (The Twinkies AND the couch).

The world is a dangerous place. Not doing something doesn't guarantee you won't die.

you are not a smoker, you dont know. for some, its addictive. for some heavy smokers, if they stop smoking for a while, they feel their body/skin is itchy or pain here/there, smoke can relief that. thats why its damn hard to quit for some people.

Nicotine is a D-R-U-G and until it is recognized and accepted as one (and eventually regulated as one) it will continue to cause the problems it causes.
