I am going to be supporting US immigration laws in a speech and my class is composed of nothing but minorities (mostly Mexicans) and the ignorant ones are loud mouths. So you can pretty much imagine how hard the audience is going to be on me. I already know that US immigration laws are hardly enforced at all but thats an entirely different story, I just support them. I need to be able to come up with effective responses to anticipated statements while not offending anyone. Also, PLEASE people who are against our current immigration laws do not answer this question unless you are gonna help me, I already looked on both sides the argument and I don't need further influences to change my opinion. By the way, if you guys know other things they'd say, then I am all ears. Now, this is where you guys come in, I need help replying to these statements.....
1. Why should the US have strict immigration laws when it is composed entirely of immigrants from foreign countries to begin with?

2. Immigration laws are racist and are just causing more sufferings and deaths to border crossers.
3. Why should US have immigration laws if they are hardly enforced?
4. What does the US have to lose by loosening their immigration laws?
5. (Please help me figure out what else they would say!)
Most of these I already came up with responses to, but I want more effective ones so I can get a good grade.

Thank you theanswerman! Though your number 5 answer would be hard to say since we pretty much forced Mexico to sell it for dirt cheap after many battles.

1. The US doesn't have strict immigration laws. An example of a country with strict immigration laws would be Japan. In fact, Mexico has tougher immigration laws than the United States. An example of this would be a US citizen cannot live within 50 kilometers of the US border when applying for Mexican citizenship, and must have either a viable skill or a constant source of income before even applying to be a citizen.
2. Immigration laws are not racist, they are nationalist. There is a huge difference since the laws apply to any immigrant from any country -to include the white ones.
3. Realistically, the US shouldn't have immigration laws if they refuse to enforce the ones we have. Anything else, beside enforcement, is political posturing.
4. The problem with loosening or abandoning immigration laws is that poor nations may deport their poor people to the US, and hope for a parasite economy. Essentially, what happens is they use the immigrants to send money back home to support the failing nation. Imagine if Ethiopia sent all their AIDS patients to the US? The problem is that the problems of other countries will become American problems if we have a porous border.
5. I would place a solution for illegal immigration (it's not more border enforcement) but it'll take too long.

1. Every other country in the world has strict immigration laws including Mexico. Why should we be different. If you go through the legal process to become a citizen of the country of your choosing, would you be okay if 15 people snuck in behind you and took everything that was set up for you?
2. There is no racism in immigration. If you sneak into the country, you are committing a crime and many of the border patrol officer's are of the same race as the illegal aliens including the two who were charged with killing an illegal alien.
3. There are many laws that are not well enforced but, that doesn't mean they aren't good laws. We are trying to get the government to enforce those laws because if we don't, America will run out of resources by the time our youth are 30 years old.
4. refer to number 3. Our natural resources are being sucked dry. Social Security that the legal citizen's have been paid into since day 1 are being sucked dry by the people who are not giving back to what they have taken from.
5. You will probably hear something about this land already belonged to mexicans until the white man took it away from them. You will need to point out that the land was purchased from Mexico so by trying to take it from America, they are in fact attempting to steal it.

1. Because our schools can only take so many people and our hospitals can only serve so many people. Education quality is dropping and hospitals are closing in areas where illegal immigrants concentrate. Cumulative numbers matter. Once the issue was need for more people, now the issue is overpopulation and strained services.
on the racism question, our laws apply equally to all races but an amnesty would benefit one country (Mexico) much more than all other countries. It could be argued that that would be racist. http://www.cis.org/articles/2003/back1203.html
4 billion people in the world are poorer than the average Mexican. What would our schools and hospitals be like if they were all allowed in?
And here is some data. However, as a practical matter, knowing teachers, they will consider the truth unkind and you will have to do MUCH better in your points than the other side will to get a decent grade.

edit, then to 5 for answerman's responses, you can point out that every other country in the world got their land the same way, and that THEREAFTER we built the schools and services and economy that makes what is north of the border different from what is south of the border. Since we built and fund those services, we get to say how many and who can use them.

You can tell them thaqt in mexico the same problem exists with illegal immigration.
On mexico's southern border lies the country of Guatemala. Tens of thousands of guatemalans enter Mexico illegally and stay there and do jobs that Meixcans don't want to do and many people catch them and beat them up and try and send them back to Guatemala. So you can tell tehm just like the people want to protect Mexican society and quality of life so you want to do the same for your country. Also you can say that if people wait their turn and enter the United Staltes legally then there would be no problem because those pwople who come here are comming here legally.
The problem is that too many people are comming here illegally.
Also you can tell them that a country is like a house. Ask those students if they would allow so many homeless people to come and live in their house and let those people sleep in the childrens beds and make their own children sleep on the floor. Also ask tehm if they would be giving less food to their own children in oreder to feed so many homeless people who have come to live in their homes. Also ask them if they would go out and work overtime and send their children out to work to pay to feed these people and then would they let those homeless people go and bring their friends and relatives into their houses until there are too amny people to live there, You will see that they can not say anything to answer your question.
If they are decent and reasonable people you will have convinced them of your stand on immigration and why you support your country's immigration laws.
If they are unreasonable then they will just insult you and call you a lousy racist anglo-american who is a person who is intolerant. Then you will realize that there can be no meeting of the minds as the expression goes.
To answer your first question.......
1- The US> is composed of American citizens. Yes there are immigrants who have come to live here but the country is not composed entirely of immigrants as you say in your question. The United States was formed as a country on JUly 4th 1776 by many people who had been born here and also anyone living here from that date on was a citizen. This country and society was built by american citizens. Yes there were many people who came here over the next two hundred years as immigrants but the numbers were not so many as compared to now. From 1776 to 1976 there were maybe 10 million people who came here as immigrants. Do the math and break that down and you will see how really few people came here over the years. Since 1996 to 2007 two million illegal aliens came here each year. That makes 20 million in 11 years, as opposed to 10 million in 200 years.
2- The reasojn why US should have strict immigration laws is to make sure that the people who come can be absorbed by American society and that gives the people time to adapt to their new country which is USA. Otherwise you have the problem of so many different peoples who come here and never become americanized. They just stay who they are. For example they will always be Chinese-americans asian americans carribean americans russian americans polish americans somalian americans mexican americans colombian americans.
NO other country on earth would allow this type of immigration to happen on such a massive scale.
I hope I have been able to give you some different aspects to your question and this way you will be able to come up with some ideas to be able to explain your viewpoint in the debate.

If you have time, look up Mexico's immigration laws and cite those. You will be surprised how strict they are. Most countries are comprised of immigrants. It does not mean that you have to let everyone in no matter what their skill level, motives, work ethic, health or intentions. You don't really believe that Mexico is filled with natives who magically appeared there.

JUST BRING THE TAX ID ISSUE UP: we are obbligated to get a tax id, of course to pay taxes, we can not use the number to get a job either, now remember the word, illegals inmigrants, that doesn't get no medical insurance, that can't not get housing, or any freebies, because you are just a ghost here, but then you go to the IRS and apply for the damn thing, you get it and they dont report you with any authorities, WHY; BECAUSE THEY ONLY WANT THE MONEY, and still you'll get deported and treated unhumanly.

Research our legal immigration. I believe that we allow more legal immigration than the rest of the world combined.
Borders, language, culture.
That is what defines a nation. There is a limit to the amount of immigrants we can assimilate before we lose one or all of the three.

Almost each and every country in the world is made up of immigrates, we can can surrender our right to control our borders and ports of entry because we are a country of immigrates. If illegals choose to cross our borders, illegally, they alone have to accept the consequence of their actions, I do not wish harm to anyone, but those who die on the border knew the dangers of crossing illegally. Racism is not a factor because most Hispanics are white.
