Every one knows, that it will be bad for the American public, and the only ones that will gain from it in the long run will be the Politicains and the corporations that are backing them.
It just appears to me that any one that is fighting for amnesty is blind to what it will lead to.

petey - I know where yo are going, perhaps you did not read the rest of my question. I was trying to state that perhaps, we should get back to our basic set of laws and enforce them with a passion.

crabby - I'm not sure if you relise this or not, but there has always been legal ways to become a American citizen, or entire to work on a tempoary time limit.

dolly - That is a myth, minor of the cost of produce is from the labor involved. The cheap labor only makes a difference to the employer. Paying Americans a living wage will only cost the average family a extra $10 a month .

LeAnne - I agree with your suggestions. Those are not new ideas but they are good ones. I do belive implementing something like that would help stop illegals from entering the U.S. .

Fact is, we've turned a blind eye for so long that the problem of trying to enforce the immigration laws now concerning the 10 million or more illegal immigrants is out of the realm of possibility - it would simply be impossible to round them up, prove their status and deport them. Furthermore, we don't know who they are or where they are. I know enforcement is what most people would like to see happen and it doesn't sound that difficult if you say it quickly, but the reality is we don't have the means or manpower to accomplish this. Adding to the complexity of this problem is some of them have started families (and their U.S. born children are U.S. citizens regardles of either or both parent's status.)
And the bottom line is if we don't effectively seal the border, we'll be playing a game of catch, deport and re-catch.
Instead of debating proposals that cannot be implemented, getting angry and making the problem even worse - we definately should be considering proposals which are realistic and can be accomplished.
Suggestions:
Mandate employer responsibility for determining a job applicant or employee's status - and fine and jail the greedy bastards if they violate it. Corporations, farmers, contractors - large and small alike - no valid ID or social security number or work visa - no job - that's easy enough. For instance, if you have 25 employees and you're filing 10 W-2 forms at the end of the year, perhaps an investigation is in order.
Mandate landlord responsibility to determine the status of any tenant he rents or leases an appartment or house to - and if any illegal is arrested and his address is listed, fine the hell out of the landlord to the tune of enough money as to be a real incentive for him to maybe check the next time he rents the place out. Second offense - jail.
Deport any illegal alien arrested for any infraction of our laws.
Sooner or later, the undesirable illegal aliens will come in contact with law enforcement at some level - and when they do, it's no longer a game of catch and release. If the Feds can't handle the case in a timely manner, well, I guess the illegal alien will simply have to wait his turn to be deported.
Think about it - if these steps are put in place - the illegal aliens would find no jobs and no place to live - and, most importantly, no incentive to enter the U.S. without valid documentation.

My friend, sorry, but I do not agree with your premise..so first I must ask that you try to re-focus a bit and begin to understand that addressing the issue of 12 million bodies in our country is simply not a question of amnesty. The 'amnesty' anthem is nothing more then a politician's way of playing for votes. In other words, fear mongering at best and playing upon selfishness at worst...So long as you unquestionably follow such baseless logic, then perhaps you too may be able to see the emperor's new cloths!
Please, before you raise the 'enforcement' issue, tell me which employer (corperate or individual) who is complaining about cheap labor?
Please forgive me, as I don't mean to be offensive, but I will admit that while I find the situation to be unfar and grievous, I also consider the entire 'amnesty' cry rather hallow and ill-conceived, to say the least. Demonizing the fellow who is mowing your neighbor's yard strikes me as rather un-Godly.
The reason to consider immigration reform seems clear...too many people are here illegally...it is 'tolerated' because it is something of a symbiont relationship...we love cheap labor and the folks who provide it unfortunately find it preferable to the alternative (no employment!) That by no means should be the case, and I do not subscribe to it, but blaming the ultimate victim is not the answer...The real answer has much to do with being a bit less greedy, and that, my friend, is the larger issue upon which the entire immigration question really revolves...that most dare not speak about....Blessings

The problem with the illegal immigrants lies in the US and not in Mexico or with the Mexicans trying to improve their lives.
The problem and the culprit is US industry, Wal-Mart, US farms and almost assuredly someone in your family or living on your block.
The same problem exists in the so called drug war. That problem is called DEMAND.
If you want the drugs and the illegal aliens to stop flooding across the borders...stop employing illegals and consuming drugs.
All of us Americans, of all economic levels and all races and religions are so 'cultured' to blame someone else that we never take responsibility when it can possibly be shifted to someone else.
Best Regards.

Wrong. "Everyone" doesn't know it will be a bad idea because it isn't.
It's only bad in the deluded fantasies of the bigots and racists that make up the neoconservative fringe groups like the KKK and the minutemen.
What it will lead to is the same thing welcoming new immigrants has led to in this country for 200 years--a richer and more diverse society and a stronger, healthier economy.

Why? As the old saying goes - if you can't beat them, join them. Bush could have the entire problem fixed within a week if he wanted to, but he is giving the democrats what they want, in order to punish the people who voted for them.

So what, a bunch of anti-illegals will start to cry? Or protest, they can't even do that. For all I care they can leave the US if they won't like how life will be for now on. Get over it. 12 million immigrants will not leave. It's a fact.
I think the bill should pass.

if you want to see the cost of food rise 300%, then go for it. there should be a label for no-illegals like there is for organic.
