How would you about taming a ferrel kitten. This one is about 6 to 8 weeks old. It came up to my house and is living on the back porch. It runs and hides everytime we walk out the back door. Husband has been calling it Scooter because of the hiding...

patience is the key and food is the tool. The kitten has to get use to seeing you for more than 2 second... First off so stick around a bit talk/walk slowly. Food is next.. think Hansel and Gretel and leave a bread crumb trail. Just be around while it is eating. Then slowly (day by day) bring the bowl closer. Soon it will be eating at your feet literally and you will be able to touch/pet it by then. Just have to win its trust. This the perfect time to "catch" this little guy for your pet. The converted stray at this age is usually always great.

I think it would be tricky unless you catch it. I would wear gloves though. We bought two kittens from a mother that was ferrel. She was captured while pregnant but those kittens still had the ferrel insticts and would absolutely claw into our hands when we picked them up. It didn't take long to tame them with lots of handling. We got them about 6 -7 years ago and they are fantastic cats now.

Your Highness:

Why don't you bring it in gently and bring it to a vet to check out the health of this kitten, perhaps you could wean it into your home and adopt it. Cute name by the way. We have a cat that is was doing the same thing however it was a house cat that someone decided to let go, mean All the best.

Put food in the same place every day. Don't approach it (especially when it is eating), it will just run. It will take a lot of time for it to trust you. When you become a constant food source, it may get closer. Try to coax it gently to come to you, don't go to him.

Honestly, if it is truly feral, it may never be domesticated. But I hope you will consider feeding it and giving shelter in the cold weather.

You should also contact a local animal group (not a shelter, a non-profit group) who can lend you a humane trap so you can catch the cat and have it neutered. Otherwise you may have a dozen cats around. If you need to find a group go to Petfinder.com and search city/state for a group in your area.

Good luck. I hope it works out for you and the cat!

Wel first off you need to take it in to the Vet to be checked out!
You can tame it by trying these simple steps..
First do you see mom or any more kittens anywhere?

Give it some warm milk or wet food, and Lil by Lil take time to sit outside like on a chair away from it or swing ,and talk with it even if it runs away it will return to it ,so just call kitty kitty and it will soon trust you enough to allow you to get closer to it.,
when it does grap it gently by the scruff be very careful not to get scratched !! Have a pet taxi or clothes basket ready to put it in .but don't leave it in their.they get too hot in the taxi's.

Use winter or thick gloves if you need to when you tend to it until it gets used to you !
take in inside and keep it in a extra bed rm
or other rm away from other pets and alot for noise.
get a litter bx .
is it old enough to eat reg cat food and drink water?
go to walmart they have kitten bottles for $1.97 each and kitten formula, kitten food!

take to your vet as soon as you can!

God bless!
ps love the name scooter! cute.....alot of my cats were strays.feral.so most of the time you can tame them in time!
spay or neuter it by age 4-5 months!

the best thing to do is play with it and keep it around you so it knows you are not the enemy. once it realizes you are not going to hurt it, it will stop being so skiddish. try to keep your house as quiet as possible, as loud noises scare it even more. you can also use a clock that ticks, and set it near the kitten.. the tick immiates the mothers heart beat and maybe that will calm it a bit.

Problem with cats is if they don't have any human contact by thet time they're at that age they'll never make good pets. I used to live at an apartment where people kept feeding this stray cat she was friendly however her kittens were not.

You might get it to come to you when it's hungry enough, you might even be able to touch it after a time but it'll never be a house cat.
