The risks of infection really are great...Why risk it to save a few bucks? If you are hell bent on doing it yourself, here are some steps you can take to help lower the risk.
SERIOUSLY...don't do it yourself.
1. Alcohol...leave the needle in the alcohol for 20 minutes. Simply rinsing it with alcohol isn't enough.
2. Iodine. Clean the outside and inside of your nose several times with a q tip soaked in iodine (do not use the same q tip and don't clean the inside of the nose and then clean the outside)
3. neosporin. There should be a large coating of neosporin in your nose. (again use a q tip)
4. Gloves. After you have done all of this, take some latex or vinyl gloves to pick up the needle (DO NOT TOUCH THE TIP). Sterile gloves are by far your best bet, but you probably won't be able to find them.
After it is done and the stud is in, neospornin 5x a day inside and out of the nostril. (Again with a q tip and never the same one for inside and out). Obviously, do not use any of the above if you have an allergy to any of them.
SEE A DOCTOR IF THERE IS ANY SIGN OF INFECTION. Seriously, you shouldn't do this yourself, but if you insist, these are some steps that can help make it less risky. (Don't do it yourself...let a professional do it).

Good lord, just go to a piercer and have it done RIGHT. Do you want a big honkin' SCAR on your face/nose for the rest of your life to remind you what a fool you are/were?
Let's see... "I've heard that if I hit myself in the head with a hammer, it'll hurt... I've talked to people who said it didn't hurt when they did it... so how do I hit myself with a hammer so it DOESN'T hurt?" (eyeroll) /end sarcasm
Lastly, the "others" who haven't gotten infections were LUCKY.

The first and most important step is to go to a professional to have this done. I have my tongue pierced and have tattoos, but there is no way in hell I would do it myself. That is just asking for trouble and infections.

I, honestly, wouldn't recommend this.
However, with a quick search I found a girl who has done something similar.
She included fairly detailed instructions. HERE
If you're going to do it. You'll do it. I know that nothing I can say will stop that. I'd like for you to be well educated if you try it. Maybe if you email the above mentioned girl, she can give you tips or direct you to the original site she visited.

Regular piercing salons can't even do cartiliage piercings, you have to go to a tattoo parlor, so doing it at home is a very bad idea. Unless you have an autoclave at home you can't get anything clean enough to go messing around with such serious piercing. What if its crooked? What if you hit something inside your nostril?

Whether you get it done professionally or do it yourself, you are still going against your mother's wishes! What's your point then? If you're gonna do it, just do it professionally. It's quick, clean and cheap.

Don't do it yourself. I just read about a girl who was going to pierce her own nose and got her sister to help and the needle slipped and tore her lip. Better yet don't pierce your nose at all. It's a really bad idea.
