Yes, the size of a briefcase.

Yes.

While any atomic bomb would have to be fairly large and heavy just to contain the fissionable material needed to detonate we could easily be talking about a bomb that could easily be hidden in the trunk of a car or in a van.

Remember that the Oklahoma City bombing was done using a rented Ryder rental truck.

We know reasonably compact nuclear bombs have been built, and a fair number of them were built in the Soviet Union prior to its breakup. Some are unaccounted for.

It is also possible that there may be national groups willing to sell this technology to terrorist interest such as al-Qaeda.

Given the fact that it is very difficult for us to prevent people and drugs and other illicit commodities from crossing our borders or our beaches we should be afraid.

But that fear should be translated into better preparedness. We should demand better border and beach security because it is the smart way to control these issues. And we should be in favor of any measures which facilitate identifying and tracking terrorists who could trigger such devices.

Yeah, we'll be attacked again, probably this time by some suitcased sized mini-nuke. I'd guess that it will happen before the end of 2009. The world is really starting to heat up right now, I'd estimate major wars breaking out with Iran and Isreal, and of course the United States. Unavoidable, really....

yes very possible some exist, and since the majority of the world seems to dislike america it is possible someone out there is planning another attack sooner or later. i dont think our country should be afraid just aware and precautious. That is why national security is so important. But i also think the United States has the ability to react towards anybody who tries something like that but in a more affective manner.

The Soviets and the Americans both developed nuclear weapons that were the size of foot lockers and even suitcases that could be used by engineers. Now these are few in number, but only one needs to get into the hands of terrorists.

Oh yea, the Russian suitcase nukes. Last I heard something like 5 were unaccounted for.

They'll show up, I figure If a Dem gets in in '08, we'll see where they are.

I think England or Africa is going to get it first.

during the 'cold' war there were Soviet spies that had suit case nukes in their possession in the US in case of war they would detonate them in place to disrupt the war effort here, these agents were known as "sleepers" but what most Americans didn't know we had as many agents in Russia as well.......what is disturbing is that some were not destroyed and are missing

If you remove the lead shielding from a Nuclear weapon you could carry one in a backpack but if you did this you are dead soon from Radiation Poisoning.
