What you're looking for is the Thermohaline conveyor belt, and it plays a huge (theoretical) part of Europe's warmer climate, as well as playing a direct role in the regulation of polar ice (the thermo part). Melting glacial ice also plays a part in the haline portion of the conveyor as ice produces fresh water which is lighter relative to saltwater.

I'd suggest you do a search to gather as much specifics as you can. The current GW crowd seems to shy away from discussion of Thermohaline forcings, possibly because it is still poorly understood, or perhaps because portions of the conveyor are submerged for as long as 1600 years, masking a temperature as well as CO2 "memory".

One thing that you'll find is that we definitely do not know as much as boldly claimed, and certainly not enough to warrant the level of drastic actions demanded by those who believe in AGW.
