Had this same problem... 9 years ago. Just go outside and just start out with short runs, if you're not a runner. Then just each week increase the amount of time you run. Also think about what people will think if you stop running to walk. Don't want to look like a loser. The treadmill won't do that to ya. Good luck!

Switch things up. Set a schedule and run everyday, but set a different time you run each day. Some days, plan to run at night, others in the morning. Don't always run on the treadmill, some days go for runs outside. Set a goal at the end of every 7-10 days. Work hard and try to achieve it. Maybe setting these goals will help you want to run more. If you run better with music, bring music. Bring a friend or family member. I run with my sister and it makes everything much easier. Realize that working hard now will save you from an embaressing and tough time come tryouts. I wish you the best of luck. Make sure you are breathing correctly too when you run and although its good to lean forward a little, pretend a string is holding you up from your back, things will be easier. As time passes, you'll find running to be a lot easier and a lot more fun. Good luck!

You can try to make running a challenge to you by signing up a 5K, 10K, half-marathon or full marathon race.
There are many runner training groups that you can find on the web for any particular race event. Once signed up, you would follow the program to run with supporting groups. It may help. I have signed up the San Diego Rock and Roll Marathon 2007 since Feb. I ran every other day with a group of people. There was a target miles to complete every time. On Sat, it could be a long run for more than 10 miles.
You can join runner groups for charity, such as Team in Training.
Or, you can get an iPod+Nike. The device allows you to upload your run to the Nikeplus database and challenge people around the world. I found it very fun to talk to runners in different regions.

Ask a friend or family member to go running with you on a regular basis... If you don't like that idea, put some music that pumps you up!
