Staging depends on the size of the tumor, lymph node involvement and how far the cancer has spread. Without having surgery yet, they likely will not have this information to give her. Please be patient and stay calm for your mother. She is really going to need your strength in the months to come. I'll keep the two of you in my thoughts and prayers.

First of all, I'm sorry to hear that. I can imagine what you feel like, because my Mum has BC too.
First thing to do: DON'T PANIC.
I know it's hard, but try to breathe and then ask questions.
Read. Talk to your Mum. Talk to the doctors. Ask them about their experience with breast cancer.
Before ANYONE knows what to do, you need to wait for the results.
Depending on the stage and kind of breast cancer, your Mum might not even have to have a masectomy or all lymph knots removed. There are other ways, escecially at an early stage.
Please don't believe everything you read here.
I know it might happen what one of the others wrote, but she wrote it like that WILL happen, and since she's not your Mum's doc, she does not know that!
If you want more (serious) information about breast cancer, don't ask here or read wiki...
Rather go to www.komen.org, the american cancer society, or www.avonfoundation.org
They have a LOT of information and links and stuff.
Take care.

She will need a breast and lymph nodes removal, and chemotherapy to stop the cancer from spreading. Should everything go fine, she would need even more to stop the cancer from returning, on the most optimistic view. Takes years. It will put a cloud over your lives, but at least try that it is the smallest possible.

When I was diagnosed with breast cancer my breast and shoulder hurt. The cancer was diagnosed high grade three. I had a lumpectomy because my surgeon did not think a mastectomy was necessary. It is now three years since diagnosis and I am still cancer free. So be optimistic about your mothers prognosis. Breast cancer is one of the most treatable cancers and I would imagine your mothers outlook is very good. Stay positive for her because the attitude of people closest to her is very important. I found when I was being treated that, during chemotherapy and radiotherapy, my family treating me no differently was a great incentive to my recovery.
