Look. You can't just concentrate on Christians for believing in a religion. For example... You can't blame people for believing that the U.S will, i dunno, win the football world cup sometime. No matter how ridiculous it sounds, it's just a belief.

I'm more of an atheistic catholic.... I think it's a great institution, and it's a good way to live your life, what catholicism teaches.

Anyway. I'm an intelligent person, I've read up on and understand things like evolution, and geology, and plate tectonics, and biology and astrophysics. And I'm also INTERESTED (just interested) in theology, so I've read on that too.

Anyway. Be careful in using the generalisation "Christians" when referring to the crazies that refuse to believe in little things like evolution, and the age of the earth etc.

It's insulting to the rest of us.

Public protest?

I'm in Ireland, most of us are catholics. We don't really have any of those lunatics here.

Hexley, the majority of the Christian faith are CATHOLICS, who believe in things liek the big bang and evolution, and see a lot of the old testament as allegories.

Fair enough.

Now go admit this to your priest, your parents, and your children.

See how loving the response will be.

I suggest that you have decided to NOT share your thoughts in the real world, because in the world of Catholicism and Christianity in general, there's not much room for as much dissent as you've displayed here.

EDIT: Please forgive my distinctly American interpretation of what you were saying. In this country your statements would be seen as tantamount to disowning your family and your culture. However, I understand that your description of Catholicism in Ireland is often exactly as you described. It was an honest error, since you made reference to people in the US believing we would win the world cup. Since I am an atheist in the USA and aware that the "crazies" are running OUR country, it is sadly right in front of my eyes, and unless someone identifies themselves as non-American in a posting, I am afraid I occasionally make the grievous and arrogant error of assuming they are a fellow countryman with similar experiences.

Not sure if I follow your logic.

Look Christians believe in the bible. They base their entire belief structure on it. Atheists bring up all the contradictions, silliness and illogic in the bible to highlight that it's nowhere near a divine book and should not be used as a morality road-map by any clear-thinking adult. If you buy into the silliness of the bible, you're fair game. If you start making qualifications that you're a Christian "atheist" then you're really not a Christian, are you? You're an atheist or agnostic that's too afraid to stand by his reasoning. Stop being wishy washy and pick sides. You know deep down you want to join the land of the thinkers!

I have to wonder, if you're an "atheistic" Catholic, why you would cling to an institution that has all but destroyed your country through the sectarian violence of its adherents (and Protestants), whose priests routinely molest young children sexually, and which continues to be a force for evil (yes, evil) in the world by insisting that birth control and abortion are wrong despite massive overpopulation in third world countries.

Really, why not give it (religion) up?

I know there are many reasonable and sane Christians out there-many of them are my friends. That's why when I ask questions I generally say 'some Christians believe', because I know not all of them are alike.

You sound like a very intelligent person and I would certainly not insult you :)

if you believe in theology why isn't your catholic god held in complicity for creating Lucifer who he new would be the devil.
I was Catholic now as an atheist I see the tainted side of morality that is promulgated by formal religion as an extention of superstition. I don't believe in appeasing the gods with virgin sacrifice for better crop yeild either .

How old is the earth then? And has anyone ever proved evolution as more than a theory just like creationism? If so site your sources and prove it to me!

If fundies give you a bad name, what can we do anyway.

If you care so much then moderate christians should publicly protest against anti-evolution fundies.
