It depends on if the Church receives the gifts of the Holy Spirit or not. Some Churches are scared of satans copy cats of the gifts of the Holy Spirit. But the gifts of the Holy Spirit are easily discerned.

Is the love of God or the love of others the fruit of it. When one is filled with the gift of speaking in tongues, it is more than just speaking a holy language. It is loving God. The Holy Spirit teaches us to praise God. It is also trusting God to give the Holy Spirit control of your voice. So, then also, God teaches us how to worship God in Spirit & Truth. And the Holy Spirit gives more gifts. Usually the gift of speaking in tongues is one of the first gifts. It starts by teaching us to praise God in tongues. See? The devils copy cats won't praise God. Their copycat has a sense of mockery in it. And the words are like this, "bla bla bla bla".

Some churches believe that speaking in tongues is THE sign that you are saved and full of the Holy Spirit, This is not true, You do not have to speak in tongues to be saved. If the church does speak in tongues there must be interpretation , which does not happen in all churches that speak in tongues. My church does not speak in tongues, but my church does not condemn those who do- or those who do in private, which I do. Tongues is one of the gifts of the Spirit not the only sign,

Because some churches take a few scriptures out of context or mis-interpret them. Speaking in tongues wasn't incoherant babble like it is in churches nowadays. The apostle Paul said that if there wasn't an interpretor there that the person speaking in tongues should be quiet. Speaking in tongues meant to have the ability to speak in another language without having previously learned it.

LOL...
It's a case of who's the nuttier and the boldest liar. All god-fostering churches are wacko, of course, and that's by nature of their belief, but the tongue-speakers are the nuttiest of wackos and the most shameless liars and hypocrites you could ever hope to find.

Here's a short story - a true story.

I dated a women, a country girl and a christian, several years back who one afternoon heard a babbling, calling voice emitting from somewhere deep in the dark of her families barn. She investigated the sound, of course, and was shocked to find her grandfather, a respected elder of his church, "...speaking in tongues," a phenomenon which only happens to one while he is in the light of god during a church service. She quickly put two and two together and guessed that he was practicing for the following Sunday church service. When she confronted him, he stammered to answer, and finally claimed stubbornly that he was unaware of making any sound at all... She didn't believe a word of it, and she quit the church altogether soon afterward.

I really believe that one would need to read ALL the verses in 1 Corinthians, Chapters12 through 14 and then look at what may have been meant by "speaking in tongues" as a whole -- and to understand the context of what was said concerning this.

For one thing, I see that the word "understanding" if often connected with "tongues" -- lending to the idea that what was being spoken was not necessarily a 'foreign language' but simply speaking words in a way or manner that could not be understood by the person listening.

I am sure we have all had similar experiences where someone who was 'learned' in a certain, specific field goes to describe something to us and we respond with, "...it's all Greek to me..." or we ask for what has been said to be "...translated into English..." Right?

Also this could mean that when others -- prophets for instance who were not from your country or did not possess your language (or understanding) 'naturally', that when they spoke, they would need to have someone literally 'interpret' the 'message' for the others that were listening.

Again this could equally apply to some one who, altho they used the same language, that you still could not understand what they said because of the manner in which they spoke -- for whatever cause or reason (like a speech impediment for instance).

Not understanding is not understanding reagardless of the "sounds" that come out of your mouth.

I know that some believe that the "gift of tongues" means that one can speak in their ow 'native tongue' to others who speak a completely different language -- or to a group of people who all speak different languages -- and the person speaking will be understood by all.

Again, I believe that the key to/with speaking in tongues is NOT "the speaking" -- nor the language or words -- but the understanding that occurs, for as these scriptures point out -- what good does it do to speak in a language that no one understands the message?

Also coupled together with the concept and circumstance of understanding to speaking in tongues is also the goal of prophesying versus simply speaking in tongues. Again prophesying implies understanding -- but a very specific understanding -- one which would be at a "spiritual" or "revelatory" level.

Equally important is the discussion of "charity" in these chapters as a "key element" in any "spiritual gift". The Greek word for charity is "love" -- or interpreted above the normallly understood "love" as practiced by most in the world -- or "spiritual love" -- which is, the "pure love of Christ" -- or as some refer to it as being -- "godly love".

As far as the speaking of tongues related to belief or a belief system;

In Chapt 14 (1 Cor), verse 22, it is written:

"Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not; but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe."

The bottom line for me is, is that no matter what is said -- whether it be in my own "native tongue" or in some other -- of this earth or not, if I and others do not understand what is being said -- or the meaning thereof, then it is as some would say -- simply "gibberish".

So after reading the above biblical references and together with this post, one should be able to figure out for themselves why it is that some churches believe in "tongues" while others do not.

Regards,

Tongues is just plain old Gibberish. It has no syntax, no structure and no cohesive vocabulary. If you listen to those people it's nothing more than a continuous stream of meaningless babble. Random syllables stuck togheter to impress other folks but actually has NO linguistic merit at all.

Speaking in tongues is your spirit (which is the real you),
speaking in a language you never learned, as the Holy Spirit within gives you the utterance.
You must lift your voice in faith and give sound to the utterance within you. The Holy Spirit will not violate your free will. He will not force you to speak in tongues. You must freely and willingly surrender your tongue to Him in faith.

And truthfully some don't want to do that, they don't believe in it which is so sad.

It is because, speaking in tongues are only for the non-believers and not for the believers. That is the reason why speaking in tongues as a gift is spoken only in some churches or small churches but not in big churches where it is dominated by believers. I am a Christian, and no one in my church speaks in tongues, nor have I ever in my life seen that happen in any church I have ever been in. I have absolutely no explanation why that happens or does not happen. Never experienced it.

i like to think that just as every man finds his own way to god, god speak to them in that way. so if speaking in tongues is a part of their belief and their faith in god, they will experience it. no two people worship the same way, even if they follow the same religion or denomination.
