We just adopted two tabby kittens age 10 weeks. We have 2 guniea pigs age 2. We got kittens instead of cats thinking we can train the cats to get along or leave the guniea pigs alone.
The pigs are on the ground in a big cage my husband built them. Anyone have any suggestions?

Yes. Pretty much all animals can get along. My grandmas dogs and cats get along. And her cat got to be friends with a duck.

Great job picking kittens instead of cats! Just make sure you hold a supervised meeting between the cats and the pigs. Also try putting the pigs in their cage and let the kittens just watch them from the other side.

You should have gone with cats. Kittens are very playful and can easily injure the piggies trying to 'play' with them.

I suggest you simply put the piggies in a room you can close off and avoid any unsupervised contact between the two. If they get too close or try to attack the cage, keep a squirt bottle of water handy. You can also try laying down aluminum foil around the cage, cats hate the sound and feel of it and will try to avoid it at all costs.

Don't bother yelling or spanking the kittens, they'll just think you're trying to wrestle with them and will probably bite back.

No. They may learn to leave the guinea pigs alone, but cats are predatory animals and instinctively go after small furry animals. A bite or scratch, even in play, can be serious and deadly for a g.p. I wouldn't risk exposing them to an accident no matter how well behaved my cats were.

Cats are predator, guinea pigs are prey. That is the natural order of things. I wouldn't take the chance. You should definitely keep them away from each other.
Also, the scent of the cats will stress the guinea pigs. They will scent that there is a predator around. Separate rooms would be ideal.

Believe it or not, some Guinea Pigs and cats can get along... but they should never be left un-attended. My cats love the guinea pigs and vice versa as the guinea pigs love to play with them and their tails. Your kittens are probably the same size as your guinea pigs.. and they may think they are their littermates, so watch for any rough play.

ya sure they can, they just have to be raised together from birth, naturally they are enemies, so if they are not raised to be like siblings, then more than likely, your kitten will see the Guinea pig as prey, or in other terms, a free meal. Hope i helped!

Oh, I'm sure that the cats will love the pigs, but I don't think the feeling will be mutual...

Let them have supervised play and see how it goes. They should be roughly the same size at the moment.
