The Ranger i had was a 2001 Edge 4.0 V6 with a 5 speed automatic and 4:10 rear end. I could light the tires for days with that thing!! bad part- max MPG's for me was 17. but it was fun to drive!
If you are going with the 3.0L V6, i would go with a manual. the 3.0 is a little sluggish with an auto. Fuel mileage is the same as an auto.

An automatic is good for city traffic where you will be in stop and go conditions. Auto is good for towing and hauling and the the capacity is usually higher. Auto decreases your mileage by at least 2 mpg partly because of weight. Automatic is much more complex and requires careful and attentive maintenance such as keeping the fluid clean and at proper level. A manual transmission may never need to be rebuilt if treated right. A clutch is relatively inexpensive and can last a considerable distance before needing to be replaced. An automatic may need to be rebuilt at around 150k +/-. The cost can be upwards of $4000. I know Ford transmissions are a sore point. Other than that it's your choice.

I'm like the rest.. if you do a lot of stop and go or try to commute in a urban landscape (like rush hour freeway traffic) get an automatic... other than that the manual is the way to go..a little less maintaince for it...

I would say it boils down to how much of your commute is spent in stop&go traffic? The difference is mpg is negligible, since the auto is a 5spd that is programmed to maximize fuel mileage. So, if you spend more than 1/2 your commute in bumper to bumper, it's going to wear out your left leg in a manual.

know how to drive a manual ? also automatics are normal while a active person who enjoys more control over driving might perfer a stick ; also manuals need clutches and other but possibly can get better mileage but isnt really true anymore. ask the dealer .. what is your use.

City driving, I would get a Automatic. As for not so urbanized areas or offr oading, or maybe even you want better fuel economy with more reliability, then I would definitely get a manual.
