If the pcm has failed, there will be no communication regardless of time. But normally, lack of communication with the pcm is caused by other issues. As in, a blown fuse, or another module that has failed.

I have worked in a Ford garage for over 16 years, I can count the PCMs (computer) that I have seen fail on my fingers. If you can not retrieve codes from it the most likely concern is a blown fuse for the power point or lighter. What this does is take out the 12V power at the data link connector so the scanner won't work. If the scanner is powered up and you get no communications start looking for fuses that run the PCM, if they are all OK there is a chance that a sensor failed causing VREF circuit to shut down and the PCM will loose communications and the last possibility is another module on the vehicle network failed causing the communications error.

the computer should store the codes for a limited amount of time. Usually only about 1 hour
